That’s the catch in the system as it exists now. Any group wanting to be a tax exempt non profit has to (at least in principle) get Uncle Sam’s blessing. This looks like an open door to near-infinite abuses.

I guess my main question is, do groups HAVE to be tax exempt? What makes it necessary in the first place?
Why not gather and work on things without the exemption?
