Vladimir Putin triumphed in Russia's presidential election on Sunday and, tears rolling down his cheeks, called his victory a turning point that had prevented the country falling into the hands of enemies.

Putin's opponents complained of widespread fraud, refused to recognize the results and said they would press ahead on Monday with the biggest protests since he rose to power 12 years ago.

But the former KGB spy said he had won a "clean" victory and was on course to return to the Kremlin after four years as prime minister with almost 65 percent of votes, partial results showed.

"I promised you we would win. We have won. Glory to Russia," Putin, dressed in an anorak and flanked by outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev, told tens of thousands of flag-waving supporters at a late-evening victory rally under the red walls of the Kremlin.

Denouncing attempts to "destroy Russia's statehood and usurp power," he said: "The Russian people have shown today that such scenarios will not succeed in our land ... They shall not pass!"

The crowd at one point chanted: "Putin! Putin! Putin!" Some danced to keep warm and drank vodka from plastic glasses, with empty bottles crunching underfoot.

It was a defiant and angry speech which left Putin, 59, on collision course with the mainly middle-class protesters in Moscow and other big cities who have staged huge rallies since a disputed parliamentary poll on December 4. …

Destroy Russia's statehood . . . ? He's got no problem destroying the statehood of others, e.g. Georgia and the Ukraine . . .

He’s not the only one crying. Any chance for Russia to evolve into a truly representative state are now gone.

I’d vote for him if I were Russian. No doubt he cares more about Mother Russia than our worthless Soros sock puppet cares about us.

Compared to Obama, Putin is pro-American.

IMHO, Russia is the means to an end for Putin and his cronies. He "cares" for Russia in the same sense a bank robber cares for his get-away care.

That said, he does command respect in a way that Captain Zero never could.

Unlike W, I see something reptilian in those eyes. He’s sounding rather über-nationalist these days, plus pulling the Christian card, and I’ve never sensed one iota of humility or forgiveness about him. Be very wary. Hitlerian is not overkill as a descriptor.

When I say those are real tears, comrade, I want to see you offering me a hanky.

NOTHING changed. They are still a nation ruled by a small elite whose entire security apparatus and economic system revolves around. The rest of the people are slaves, who today simply get the sexual and some of the media freedoms not enjoyed when the iron curtain was up. Sex and drugs are often used to control people- the masses. Now they simply are the heads of companies like Gazprom etc. Instead of party chairmen they are called CEO... Comical.

Yes, but his opponents are probably getting paid by Soros. Besides, Putin has at least supported the free-market rhetoric several times. We don't know his constraints but there is no reason to trust Soros over Putin.

Putin has at least supported the free-market rhetoric several times
. . . while nationalizing all of the gas and oil producers, among other sectors.

We don't know his constraints but there is no reason to trust Soros over Putin
There's no reason to trust either of those individuals. Since when are we being forced to choose between Soros and Putin in any sphere, anyhow? Let's leave this canard alone altogether. Putin's certainly no friend to the US, what with his sending bombers to fly over our airspace among other provocations. Things won't improve, no matter how many broken "reset buttons" the liberals desperately try to push . . .

Correct! I was not supporting Putin but just cautioning that his opponents are most likely set up by Soros.
