(Georgetown,DC) - Am I the only one at Georgetown who is not upset with Rush right now?
His comments regarding Sandra Fluke, third year Law student at Georgetown University, are less outrageous when viewed in the real context of the debate on Obama’s mandate for religious institutions to include contraceptive coverage in their healthcare plans.
Fluke, in her own testimony before a Democratic panel, pointed out that the University covered birth control pills when used for the treatment of a medical condition. This is the key to understanding Limbaugh’s comments. When used for medicinal purposes and healthcare, Georgetown has no problem covering the expense of birth control under their insurance plan. Fluke’s complaint was based on the fact that it was not covered for the use as a contraceptive, which would violate the Catholic church’s beliefs.
Limbaugh’s statements were not that much of a stretch. He might have been a tad hyperbolic in making his point, but this is how he earns a living. Whether or not you agree with the way he phrased his argument, he may have a point.
Of course, no one wants to actually talk about that aspect of the issue. They would rather make this an unneeded debate about contraception rather than admit this is about religious liberty.
Limbaugh, in his attempt to focus the debate back on the actual issue at hand, has been demonized by...well, just about everybody.
President Obama went so far as to call Fluke and offer his support. Meanwhile, DC residents are paying almost $5 a gallon for gasoline. Good thing he has his priorities straight.
There have been calls from all levels of Democrats, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), for all Republicans to condemn Limbaugh’s comments. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D- NY) wrote a letter to Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) saying, “the Republicans have a special obligation to condemn the atrocious and hurtful words spoken by Mr. Limbaugh.”
Apparently, now everyone has to actively seek out and apologize for comments other people make, regardless of whether or not they agree with them, if the offender shares a similar ideology. Where does this line of reasoning take us? Should all Baptists have to make public statements that they do not agree with the actions of Westboro Baptist Church?
That would be ridiculous. Just like the outrage over Limbaugh’s criticism of Fluke. I might be in the minority on my campus, but I agree with Rush.

I was disgusted by what I saw of her testimony because she changed the subject from contraceptives to all sorts of actual medical issues. As to the ovarian cysts. How did they treat them before birth control pills? IS this possibly the only medicinal approach?
BUT...
I check out progressive radio to hear the other side of most arguments when I can. Today, Randi Rhodes said that at Georgetown, students must participate in the insurance program and it does not cover contraceptives. However, the same insurance program used by G'town employees does cover their contraception. If this is true, I think it changes the debate changes a bit. It seems to alter the veracity of G'town resisting the Obama proposal on religious grounds.
As with any news that is being filtered by two opposing sides of media, we probably don't know all the facts. But, on thing is for sure. Obama has snared a monster slice of women's vote with this hyped up story and Rush may have played a part in their success. It fits the Alinsky rule perfectly. They have found a demon.

Georgetown students are automatically enrolled in their health insurance - there is an easy way to waive it - show proof that you have comparable insurance from another source and the fee is waived.

It’s a healthcare mandate - like RomneyCare and ObamaCare - you can’t opt out of carrying health insurance as a student but you CAN opt out of the Georgetown insurance.

There was no cross-examination of the multi-year activist (who may or may not be a lesbian herself).

Yeah, much better to be raped and dodge a check-up for STD’s or pregnancy and save $150, than to carry an HIV infected baby in your body.

Overweight women are prone to irregular menstrual bleeding and BCPs straighten that out. It is true that BCPs, like most drugs, come with side effects. I remember a 30 year old woman who had a stroke while taking BCPs. She smoked too as I recall which further increases the risk. Then there’s the psychological side effects which can be quite miserable for the woman (and anyone else that happens to be around her). It is my opinion that if a doctor prescribes BCPs for legitimate medical reasons, it should be treated like any other medicine. I also think a study should be done to see if taking BCPs for actual birth control puts a woman at risk for contracting and then spreading STDs like HIV, Herpes, etc. I would bet money that any serious unbiased research would show that BCPs are, in fact, responsible for an increased incidence of STD transmission (especially in younger populations) due to the perceived lack of need for a condom. If that is the case, and I believe it is, BCPs should be treated more like cigarettes than medicine (when used for birth control at least). It’s a complicated issue but my bottom line argument is that, with regard to billing, it should be treated like a medicine if it’s being used as a medicine and we should make that distinction before we start calling women sluts.

I suspect that it’s also possible that Ms. Fluke’s family name is derived (anglicized) from the German name Pflug (meaning plow in English). The first step in anglicizing Pflug could have been a typical spelling change to Flug. And it could have evolved further in subsequent generations.
Incidentally, the German word for "hand" is "die Hand" and the plural is "die Hände, as in "Hände hoch!" ("stick 'em up!" or "reach for the sky!"--literally "hands high").
Getting back to the celebrity of the day, the German word "Fluch" means "curse." In Dutch, the word is "vloek," which is pronounced "fluke."
What about G’town covering contraceptives for ee’s but not students? Any insight?

Perhaps you should read the insurance policy offered to Georgetown students. Medicinal use of BC pills is covered. Ms. Fluke says her lesbian friend with PCOS was denied coverage for the pills and lost an ovary after suffering a ruptured ovarian cyst. Where is the lawsuit?
