Is Obama trying to leave Israel no choice?
The Globe and Mail ^ | March 7, 2012 | Professor Clifford Orwin

“Obama to warn Netanyahu against military strikes on Iran.” So proclaimed the headline in Saturday’s Washington Post. At their meeting on Monday, Barack Obama reportedly did just that, while reaffirming America’s commitment to Israel’s safety. And yet … could this be very different than it seems? Is it the cagey exterior of a policy aimed at leaving Israel no choice but to strike?

Look at it this way. Suppose you were the Obama administration, confronted by an intransigent Iran but facing an election in November and an American public weary of Middle Eastern wars. Wouldn’t you rather shoehorn an ally into undertaking this risky and unpleasant business in your place? Then, even if you too had to intervene (as you would, at the very least to keep open the Strait of Hormuz), you’d have avoided blame for starting the conflict.

It’s happened before, and not just once. Twice already, the United States has declined to intervene against nuclear threats in the Middle East, and twice already, Israel has concluded that it had no choice but to do the job itself. In 1981, it destroyed the Osirak reactor in Iraq, and in 2007, a secret nuclear plant under construction in Syria. In neither case, so far as is known, was there a green light from Washington. But both countries reaped the benefits of actions that were effectively outsourced to Israel...

You are correct.
Israel will do what she needs to do to protect herself, regardless what BHO says - as well they should.
BHO hates America (USA) and Israel, it is evident by every action he takes.
We are so screwed if BHO is re elected, yet in my being I know he will be.........get ready it will not be pretty.

I thought Newt hit it on the head when he said Israel shouldn’t tell when they are ready to attack Iran because we cannot be trusted to keep it secret. He’s right. Our govt has so many leaks. Nothing is secret. BHO’s administration cannot be trusted.

Sadly you are correct.
My heart weeps for Israel, as a Christian I stand with them.

As a sidelight point of interest: Don’t you just know Chairman O hates it when Bibi makes speeches in the US - so leaderesque, so dignified, so understandable, so to the point, so not campaigning, in other words, so unlike himself (and all without a teleprompter)???

Indeed, the contrast has been shown in the photos: Netanyahu in flight suit by fighter jet; Hussein as a doper, goofing with joint.

Benjamin Netanyahu's brother was killed in the daring and heroic raid on Entebbe; Hussein's brother languishes in a tin shack in Mogadishu.

Prime Minister Netanyahu presents as a deeply patriotic, religious, courageous man in an absolute Daniel-in-the-lion's-den situation.

Hussein's toughest decision on any given day is golf or hoops.

And to be sure no greater enemy of the State of Israel exists at the level of Hussein, titular leader of the free world.

I posit the 44th POTUS is as he says Muslim. He presents as Islamist, as Communist, as anti-American and anti-Israel.

Who would bow to the king of the House of Saud.

And Hussein selected the top fan of the late Yassir Arafat as Secretary of State--the terrorist was the most frequent guest of the Clinton White House.

What did Hussein do when Tehran's Rat Boy was gunning down Iranian civilians in the street--munch some arugula and yawn.

How could Bush have accepted the 2007 NIE that Iran was not working on nuclear weapons.

The influence of the 2004 CFR paper by Zbigniew Brzezinski and Robert M. Gates, Iran: Time for a New Approach is seen.

The Arab Spring has been and continues (with Syria) to be the replacement of secular regimes with Islamist ones.

Hussein is a dangerous enemy of both Israel and the United States.

Godspeed the angels who will destroy Rat Boy's toys--and thus break Hussein's Islamist heart.

Be sure to watch Netanyahu's speech over at Powerline ("The Gathering Storm"). What a breath of fresh air to watch a real leader rather than our intellectually-challenged metrosexual do-anything-it-takes-to-get-re-elected POS.

Hussein thinks that if he can push Israel into attacking Iran, that would be the end of Israel and his muslim problem would be solved. He hasn’t read the end of the Book.

Here is the tactical problem:

Iran is well aware of Israel’s (rightful) intentions and America’s weapons, and have up-armored every critical process in their nuclear weapons program.

Tunneling is something that Iran has always done better than any country in the world, throughout history, it’s an engineering fact.

Israel’s goal is to attack, not to necessarily succeed. A show of strength at a minimum.

America has a different challenge, we cannot participate in an attack that doesn’t win. If our bunker-busters don’t work, we lose the credibility of that weapon system.

The world will then know that anyone, N Korea, Venezuela, Cuba, Myanmar, Pakistan, etc can hide evil underground.

Our military planners doubt the bunker-busters will work.

De-mystifying ground penetration bombs ends their diplomatic and strategic use.

OK, everyone will know how deep to dig.

And...Iran will learn from any failed attack that it cannot be stopped by Israel or America. They will bray like a pack of mules at the world...and be believed.

I believe that Iran wants to be attacked.

It's just Zero pulling a Pontius Pilate maneuver -- and nobody bought it back then, either.
