CONWAY, SC --

CONWAY, SC - A would-be armed robber was shot and killed by a shopkeeper in the parking lot of a Conway convenience store at 10 p.m. Monday night.

According to a news release, Horry County police officers responded to the Food Shop at 1300 US 501 Business around 10 p.m. and found one adult male, face down with a gun beside him, dead from apparent gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the business.

The victim had on latex gloves and a cloth mask over his face, according to an incident report released by the Horry County Police Department.

The shopkeeper told officers he was walking to his car after closing when he was approached by a suspect.

The businessman said he had been suspicious of a white sedan that started moving when he walked out of the store and had pulled a gun from a jacket pocket to be prepared.

The suspect who approached the shopkeeper pulled a pistol and demanded money from the clerk.

The shopkeeper responded by emptying the gun in his hand at the suspect -- five shots according to the report -- then pulled a second gun and continued shooting at the suspect who, by this time was on the ground, according to the report.

When the suspect stopped moving the shopkeeper stopped shooting, according to the report.

As the shopkeeper went back into the store the white sedan drove off.

Officers were sent to 1071 Brown Drive in Conway where they secured a white Honda Accura which had, in plain view, latex gloves similar to those worn by the victim on the center console.

During the course of the investigation, detectives identified an additional suspect as the driver and lookout during the incident.

Police arrested Tamela Riggins, 29 of Conway.

Riggins is charged with attempted murder and attempted armed robbery.

She is currently at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Food Shop employee Jamie Todd left the store at around 9:00 Monday night.

Todd was asleep with his wife in a camper behind the convenience store about thirty feet away from where the shooting happened.

“Yeah I was scared. I was scared to death, and most of the time I work with him at night and lucky I didn't walk around the corner," Todd said.

Todd’s made sure his wife, Debby, stayed in the camper.

Debby said the shots didn’t scare her because she thought they were firecrackers.

The suspect is identified as Coaty Santel Deas, said Horry County Coroner Tony Hendrick.

Hendrick said an autopsy will be performed later Tuesday to determine the exact cause of death, though preliminary results indicate Deas died from gunshot wounds sustained in Monday night's incident.

The clerk will not be charged in connection with the incident.

Keep shooting as long as the attacker is perceived as a threat.

As it should be. Too many of these "incidents" end up with the clerk being murdered even after they cooperated and gave the lowlife scumbag all of the money in their drawer.

It is not entirely clear who is being reffered to as “the victim.”

When the suspect stopped moving the shopkeeper stopped shooting, according to the report.

Such a beautiful sentence.

A little research shows that the dead bad guy was involved in another shooting a few years ago that resulted in someone’s death. Glad to see this scumbucket gone.

Don't they mean the perp, and not the victim?

He may have had 3 guns...Just because he didn’t use 3 doesn’t mean he didn’t have another one.

Leaving the store at midnight was always the spooky time for me, I kept my hand on the S&W all the way across the parking lot.
