Obama Digs In: 'Personally Lobbying Democrats to Reject' Keystone Pipeline (Senate to Vote Today)
The Weekly Standard ^ | March 8, 2012 | Daniel Halper

Posted on 03/08/2012 8:06:13 AM PST by katieanna

President Obama is digging in on the Keystone XL pipeline. He is "personally lobbying Democrats to reject an amendment calling for its construction," Politico reports.

The White House lobbying effort, including phone calls from the president to Democrats, signals that the vote could be close when it heads to the floor Thursday. The president is trying to defeat an amendment that would give election-year fodder to his Republican critics who have accused him of blocking a job-creating energy project at a time of high gas prices.

The amendment, proposed by Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.), states that Obama would have no role in such cross-border permitting decisions since, in this case, the pipeline would originate in Canada. The measure would need 60 votes to pass, and Obama has already lost two Democrats who back the proposal - Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Mary Landrieu - and is at risk of losing more moderates and vulnerable Democrats.

The Keystone XL pipeline would create an estimated 20,000 jobs and, likely, drive down the price of gasoline in the long run. It would seem to be a good move at a time of high unemployment and high gas prices.

And, in fact, most Americans like the idea of the Keystone pipeline. According to a November poll, of likely U.S. voters, 60 percent "at least somewhat favor building the pipeline which President Obama has delayed until at least 2013 because of environmental concerns."

...not the brightest knives in the drawer.

Okay, we get the idea. LOL

JMHO, The 0 (along with a large percentage of his Clown Posse) are so totally lacking in experience outside of academia and/or government that they....and PARTICULARLY The 0 himself....simply assume that they have but to speak and all the world will leap to instantly obey.

Anybody not in compliance is a) Enemy, b) Stupid, c) All of the above.

Absolutely wonderful to read all that lapdog media crap and actually believe it, ain't it?

Baucus got into office along with a whole bunch of Anti-War punks in the 70’s and has been buying votes to stay there ever since.

Tester got in the good old-fashioned way: Vote Fraud (Which our ‘rat guverner was habitually bragging about....)

The third leg on that crooked stool is the Lee Newspapers, which run branches in all five of the “big” towns. (I won’t say any more than that, ‘cause I don’t want to get banned over those **************.)

Outside of that, we’ve got a fairly large population of tourists (mostly Californians and big-money Hollywood types) who’ve got Trophy Homes/Ranches where they can play cowboy part time. And vote.

Doesn’t really take much when the total “normal” population of the state is just over a million.

We’ll see if we can start to get the place back come November.

Don’t think so. Not this time. Landrieu for dang sure will break from O. If not, she could never show her face in NoLa again.

I wish it were so. She will gladly vote with the one. She has the parasite left voters in her pocket. She knows that this vote will be forgotten 5 minutes after it is cast.

The American people are getting exactly the government they rightfully deserve. It's just that we who love Liberty will have to suffer right along side the parasites.

Haha, no, we know he couldn't be counted on... EVER. But to get our elected Republican yellow-bellied representatives to start stating that officially (via this vote) is a hugh and series :-) step!

I love the idea of “heavy sour crude”. It sounds just plain weird. Like it’s a supermarket item.

I hope you don't mind some clarification on your post.

China is a major partner in the Canadian oil project

There are a lot of Canadian Oil Sand projects. Many developments spread of many, many miles. China is a very minor player overall in the oil sands.

the same Chinese off-shore (outside China) oil company owns one third of Chesapeake Energy

I have no doubt Chinese companies own some shares, but not a third or even a tenth.

No, I don’t mind at all. A lot of mis-information is spread on an agenda driven subject like oil and mis-information is self-defeating.

Does anyone begin to suspect that Obama ran for President to screw over the U.S. in every way possible?

And the monster called White Guilt elected him.

I don't have to begin. I knew it right from the beginning when he said he will "Fundamentally change America"

This was the vote.....

“The Senate fell four votes shy of requiring the Keystone XL pipeline to be built. The 56-42 vote failed to meet the 60 needed to attach the amendment to a highway spending bill.

Every Republican who voted supported the proposal, and 11 Democrats joined them, despite last-minute lobbying from President Barack Obama, called senators personally to persuade them it was “irresponsible.” The administration has objected to constructing the Canada-to-Texas pipeline along its current route.

Republican lawmakers and the Business Roundtable were quick to denounce the rejection of the measure. Sen. Mitch McConnell, the chamber’s Republican leader, pinned the blame on Mr. Obama..... “At a moment when tensions are rising in the Middle East, millions of Americans are struggling to find work and millions more are struggling with the rising cost of gas, Democrat opposition to this legislation shows how deeply out of touch they are with the concerns of middle-class Americans,”

Mr. McConnell said in a statement. ........”President Obama’s personal pleas to wavering senators may have tipped the balance against this legislation. When it comes to delays over Keystone, anyone looking for a culprit should now look no further than the Oval Office.”

Keystone is a win/lose/win issue for the Dear Leader.

He wins with his base the environmental marxists, loses a little with voters although its up to us to point it out. The DBM will avoid high gas prices stories like the plague. He wins the second time since high gas prices keeps the meme from his true vulnerabilities which are no budget for over a 1,000 days, spending 300 billion per month with only 180 billion coming in leaving a whopping 120 billion per month deficit, numbers that any idiot can handle. And obmacare. This is the big one. the longer we ignore obamacare the closer he gets to it being a reality.

Make no mistake. Countering the lies of the left starts here in the New Media.

We feed the rest.

Please do forward it onward. You can add that Chavez is up for reelection this year too and Venezuela’s economy is doing very poorly and loss of oil exports due to Canada tar sand oil may be the last straw for Chavez.
