Study Connects Cola Dye Ingredient to Cancer (BS Study Alert)

Could an ingredient found in the dye that provides cola with its traditional brown shade cause cancer? A controversial report released by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) says yes.

According to CBS News, the consumer interest group, CSPI, published a report, which linked Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Pepsi, and Diet Pepsi, as well as some other brown-hued sodas to a cancer-causing chemical. The chemical, 4-methylimidazole, more commonly referred to as 4-MI or 4-MEI, has been proven to cause cancer in lab rats and mice. The CSPI has petitioned the FDA to enforce a labeling system that would require sodas that contain the dye ingredient to include a warning informing consumers about cancer risks.

Despite the CSPI's alarming report, many experts denounced the findings. The FDA and the American Beverage Association were quick to defend the safety of cola products containing the chemical 4-MI. An FDA spokesperson wrote in a statement that the CSPI's petition is being reviewed but that, "a consumer would have to consume well over a thousand cans of soda a day to reach the doses administered in the studies that have shown links to cancer in rodents."

In a similar statement, the American Beverage Association wrote, "This is nothing more than CSPI scare tactics, and their claims are outrageous."

And this is being circulated again for the umpteenth time. I'm 53 and have heard it since I was 6.

Center for Science in the Public Interest"

Nuff' said.

It's bogus noise to further their agenda just like else this group does. Have they ever done a study on cancer caused by contraception pills or the negative health effects of abortion?

File this under “too much of any good thing is not necessarily wonderful, but anyone with sense knows that.”

The well known refutation to this kind of fear mongering is to point out that if the chemicals in something natural like celery were concentrated to something comparable to the amount of caramel coloring needed to give cancer to rats, that too would be a menacing toxin.

Cancer - Joe Jackson

Everything
Everything gives you cancer
Everything
Everything gives you cancer
There’s no cure, there’s no answer
Everything gives you cancer

Don’t touch that dial
Don’t try to smile
Just take this pill
It’s in your file

Don’t work hard
Don’t play hard
Don’t plan for the graveyard
Remember -

Everything
Everything gives you cancer
Everything
Everything gives you cancer
There’s no cure, there’s no answer
Everything gives you cancer

Don’t work by night
Don’t sleep by day
You’ll feel all right
But you will pay

No caffeine
No protein
No booze or
Nicotine
Remember -

Then why am I not dead? All the Coke I’ve consumed, I should be buried six feet under.

When I was a kid, I used to handle 22 ammunition. It was the non-copper jacketed type. Today there are all sorts of warnings about handling this type of ammo because of the lead content.

I used to handle mercury, placing pennies in it and making them appear silver.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve chewed on pencils with lead pant, and have breathed in asbestos powder too.

I’ve probably eaten plenty of apples with Alar.

How did I ever survive? Nanny Government failed me miserably. /s

It’s ironic too... it’s lame for “science” and it’s only in the interest of the fearmongers.

My mother had Coca Colo-rectal cancer. It was the real thing.

Should have had a V8.

I’m old enough to remember the days when kids would drop a baby tooth into a glass of Coke and it would be completely dissolved a day or two later. This was supposed to prove how corrosive the stuff was. Nothing ever changes.

Some years ago I read a book titled The Food and Drink Police (I believe that was the title.) Anyway, they had one or two chapters on CSPI and after reading those chapters I was convinced that the people in that "Center" were absolutely nuts.

Their “job” seems to be aiding attack lawyers and creating havoc in businesses. Pretty soon we will see law firms recruiting plaintiffs through TV ads. “If you have stomach or intestinal cancer and drank Coke, contact us at 555-666-7777.”

On a good day I drink maybe 8 ounces of any cola product. Most of the time I am a water or coffee or tea drinker
