5000 MAINERS SIGN PETITION TO FLUSH RUSH (barf; but many support Rush)
radio-info.com ^ | 3/9/12 | Bob Bittner (Jibguy)

..and presented to Cary Pahigian at Portland Radio Group, according to RBR. Protesters also outside the building. Cary's response: “I do believe he crossed the line. But there also is an issue of free speech. What is the line? And who is the arbiter of the line?” -and indicates that the show will continue.

However, the term "free speech" is appropriate for describing relationship between the people and government; not between people and other people/businesses.

It's probably no coincidence that this petition was presented on the International Day of the Woman; yesterday.

At least three Portland-area sponsors have pulled out, including DownEast Energy.

Also, out of all the network commercial avails in Rush's show, now less than half are paid. The remaining are PSA's. And now, even the American Heart Association doesn't want their PSA's on Rush's show!

This has taken on a life of its own; beyond name-calling, but now is a women's issue. Therefore, it's an issue for all of us.

Reaction from the WGAN facebook:
—Thanks for standing by your conservative fans!
—Please stop enabling Rush Limbaugh. Thank you.
—Where where the far left dingbats when Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a c*nt? The day of reckoning will come.
—Thanks for NOT submitting to the cyber bullies who are trying to censor free speech. Rush Limbaugh may not be my cup of tea but we need to have an open discussion of issues, not just those that are politically correct. He brings up topics that those on the far left do not want people to know about, let alone talk about. If for that reason alone, he needs to stay on the air.
—Your sponsors are on notice, WGAN. Dump Rush Limbaugh or I will e-mail and boycott any company that pays your station for advertising. Rush Limbaugh is drug addict who has no business judging others when his life is such a mess!

Another post is from someone who likes Stephen King’s prog talk station

(The author of the post above owns WJTO in Bath, ME
and WJIB in Cambridge MA. I believe both are commercially licensed but he prefers to do fundraising drives to support his easy listening music. He’s on the left to be sure,
and on his stations you will actually hear his voice saying things like, “Cut up your credit cards. Most of the companies are evil.” Anyway, note that WGAN which runs
Rush—and also Howie Carr—is standing by him, despite this petition.)

Maine is one weird place. I worked there for several years. I worked down on Congress street and watched the folks walk around. They look and sound like they came off a commune in Northern Vermont. And then I would go to the boardroom, with some of the wealthiest people in the state, and hear the same crap.

They look normal. But they could just as well be from Portland Ore....

I would guarantee that 99.9% of the signers have never listened to one minute of Rush’s show. This is the crowd mentality that gave rise to the 3rd Reich.

These signers have no idea that there is such a thing as the 1st Amendment. They would abolish it if their marching orders said so.

For some strange reason, a lot of people incorrectly think the First Amendment protects their right to say whatever they want. If they believe that, they should test it by yelling in their boss’s face. We do have the right to say whatever we want, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be repercussions.

More reaction from WGAN facebook

—Keep Rush on your station! Liberals will stoop to all levels to dismiss the words of truth and justice. Wake up, Mainers.... Our state doesn’t need to follow the rhetoric of the rest of the countries media hype......let Maine lead!

—Freedom of speech. Remember these groups insisting you take Rush off the air are as anti American as you can get. Their ultimate goal is destruction of everything in our society. Never give in to the bullies who are so intolerant of others opinions.

(I will add, freedom of choice. Those who don’t like it can turn to—oh wait, their prog. talk station flopped and is playing oldies now. OK, don’t like Rush I guess you can tune to taxpayer funded NPR...—rr)

—As long as your radio station continues to support Rush Limbaugh,
I will no longer tune to WGAN...This is not about free speech, this is about supporting an ignorant bully who has a public forum from which to spew his venom...If you condem bullying in schools, why do you allow it on your station?

(Um, did you hear what libtalker Randi Rhodes said?
Conservative women shouldn’t be allowed to have ovaries?)

Exactly and the example I always give is what if a WalMart greeter told every customer coming in, “Welcome to WalMart. F-— you.” Boss says don’t do that, he/she still does it.
Gets fired. But...freedom of speech!

repercussions: See Dixie Chicks...

WGAN: Limbaugh show stays on the air
The radio station says it will continue airing Rush Limbaugh despite a petition demanding that his program be dropped.

By Leslie Bridgers/Portland Press-Herald

SOUTH PORTLAND - The controversy over “The Rush Limbaugh Show” continued in the Portland area Thursday as protesters delivered a petition to WGAN-AM, a lawsuit was filed against a local marketing firm and more companies asked the radio station not to air their ads during Limbaugh’s program.

On Thursday morning, Annie Finch of Falmouth led about a dozen women and a couple of men into the South Portland office of the Portland Radio Group to deliver a thick white binder with the names of 5,700 people who signed a petition demanding that the company stop airing Limbaugh’s show on WGAN, one of its eight stations.

Finch, who started the petition on Facebook last weekend, said it was “fitting” to deliver it on Thursday, International Women’s Day, considering the nature of the protest.

“Rush Limbaugh’s anti-woman rants have gone so far that it is unacceptable for WGAN to profit from filling Maine’s airwaves with his hate and misogyny,” the petition read.

At least two stations that aired the Limbaugh show — WBEC in Pittsfield, Mass., and KPUA in Hilo, Hawaii — have dropped the program since Limbaugh called Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and “prostitute” last week because she testified to federal legislators in support of health care coverage for contraception.

Portland Radio Group’s president and general manager, Cary Pahigian, said the petition would not affect his previously stated position that WGAN has no intention of dropping the show.

Actually, the 5,000 on the petition were not Rush listeners anyway, just a squadron of alinskybots taking a break from their occupy duties.

With 20,000,000 listeners, the Mainiac protest amounts to .025% of the listener pool, but, insofar as these 5,000 were not, the petition is totally meaningless.

The 2012 effort by the left to "hush Rush" has failed, just like all the rest over the past 20 years.

My mom belonged to a Pro Life group which tried to organize an advertiser boycott of the Norman Lear CBS sitcom Maude in 1972 after they ran an episode where she has an abortion.

Norman Lear, his production company and CBS all launched a full-throated counterattack claiming Free Speech. They called the boycott a "bullying tactic" and practically accused my mom and her friends of taking a crap on the US Constitution.

Funny how their outlook changes when they're on the opposite side.
