UPDATED 1:58 p.m. ET

(CBS News) Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is leading Mitt Romney in the latest poll of likely Republican primary voters in Mississippi, where voters head to the polls Tuesday to choose the candidate they want to take on President Obama in November.

Gingrich garnered 35 percent support in Mississippi, compared to Romney's 31 percent in a poll released Friday by American Research Group, Inc. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum took 20 percent while Texas Rep. Ron Paul received just 7 percent.

Gingrich, who won his home state of Georgia three days ago, has said Mississippi and Alabama are must wins for his campaign, which is floundering behind front-runner Romney and Santorum.

Santorum defeated Gingrich in Tennessee on Super Tuesday, which Gingrich had also hoped to win to jumpstart his candidacy which had not had a win since late January when he won the South Carolina primary.

The Gingrich campaign said it was spending slightly more than $200,000 combined in Mississippi and Alabama on television ads to build support ahead of Tuesday's contests.

Among men, Gingrich has nearly double the support of either Romney or Santorum, according to the poll. Gingrich took 39 percent of men compared to 21 percent each for Santorum and Romney.  Among women, Romney leads Gingrich 42 percent to 30 percent, followed by Santorum's 19 percent and Paul's 2 percent.

Among those who identify with the conservative Tea Party wing of the party, Gingrich took 49 percent, more than twice Romney's 24 percent support. Santorum took 17 percent of the tea partiers and Paul just 5 percent.

The telephone poll of 600 likely Republican primary voters living in Mississippi was conducted March 7 through March 8 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Debate between Newt and O would be one for history.

Would rival the Lincoln -Douglass debates.

When I read stuff like that this country should never have ratified the 19th Amendment.

"I don’t know what your goal is but you’re only turning off Santorum voters so maybe it was always Romney for you."

Another Santorum supporter disparaging a Freeper because he does not support Santorum.

Gingrich supporter attack the other candidates. Santorum supports attack the Freeper who posts against Santorum.

This silly behavior is getting very old.

I don’t like the sweater vests. Might work for a professor at a liberal college but it doesn’t say professional or presidential to me.

Even in more casual settings, I don’t like them.

This is petty I know.

I can’t get excited about this race right now. Just can’t.

I was excited back when Rick Perry was in. I might be excited again if Newt made a real comeback.

I don’t believe the stuff about neither Santorum nor Newt being able to beat Romney, I think either could beat Romney and either could beat Obama. Still too many delegates out there to panic and Romney has gained zero ground. He still gets enough votes to beat each conservative but not enough to beat both.

Problem is ... too many people don’t like Santorum and don’t want Newt to drop out.

I was at the Newt rally today in Gulfport. He was great. Many many women. They loved him.

I don’t think Newt is old and ugly. I enjoy looking at him. He’s an interesting speaker which is more than one can say about the other candidates.

If you’re voting looks, Mitt Romney is the best looking candidate.

I’m not voting looks.

No, not because they don't support Santorum, because they're nasty, insulting, and childish. For a long time I just tried to ignore it but I do think it damages our candidates. From Perry through Santorum that kind of personal attack damages candidates.

This silly behavior is getting very old.

Yes, it is.

Heard Romney claims he's an "honorary Southerner", because he's learning to say "ya'll" and eat grits.

See, Mitt, THAT is EXACTLY why you will fail in the South. Because you and all your elitist, Establishment Republican buddies think that's all us dumb, hick Southerners care about -- football, huntin', our gen-u-ine Evangelical Special Edition Bibles, and grits.

I'm sick of you modern day, intellectual carpetbaggers who can't seem to gather that having values, morals, ethics and standards aren't weaknesses to be exploited, but strengths on which to build a solid foundation!

On this forum we attack candidates and office holders. We do so viciously.

We always have.

We tend to shy away from Freepers who attack other Freepers.

When was the last time you saw a Gingrich supporter attack another Freeper? Yeah, it probably happens.

But when you see it, call them on it.

Probably six times in the last week. Hard to think you've missed them.

He could get a bounce from his expected win in KS tomorrow.

It depends on the coverage on Sunday. Rick’s timing is significant when he wins on Saturday to have that the talk of the town on Sunday. I think they will all agree that he is getting all the regions of the United States. This is very good for Santorum. Alabama and Mississippi should go for Newt though because we need to stop Romney. We will see Tuesday night.

Well in 2008, Alabama voted in Huckster and Mississippi went with McCain. Yuk to both. I know we had a worse group in 2008 than we do this time round.

Bugger off! Little Ricky is a goner!

Sure after he wins Kansas tomorrow. Get realistic there dude. That is state number 8! When he wins Alabama on Tuesday that will be state number 9. Alabama went for Huckabee in 2008. Mississippi went with McCain in 2008. So this is how Tuesday will finish. Rick will take Alabama and Newt will take Mississippi. I actually thought it was going to be the other way around but looking at 2008, changes my mind. BTW, Romney hardly got any votes AT ALL in both states so unless you guys COMPLETELY changed your politics, there is no way that Romney will win either state.

I've been busy and only partially active.

CALL THEM ON IT AND NOTIFY ADMIN.

This site is better than that.

Hell, I've probably done it in a drunken post, and probably should have been called on it, if I wasn't.

You’re still missing the forest for the trees naps (may I call you naps?). It’s about delegates. Newt doesn’t need to win Kansas. He only needs a decent showing there. Hopefully he can win Mississippi and Alabama. Rick’s delegate problems didn’t end with Ohio and Tennessee. He has problems in Alabama, Illinois and DC too. Not too mention many of the delegates he has are not pledged.

(may I call you naps?).

Of course or Bob or ahole, or jerk or whatever (depending what I have written in my latest post. lol).

I understand how the delegates work, but even if Newt goes to the convention ahead of delegates, I would think the more states that Newt wins would be better than the South. I guess he believes going to the convention with SC, GA, MS, AL, TX (if Rick Perry can get him across the line) is enough because that is it for him. I don’t see him winning any other state. Some may say Arkasas but after Rick’s win in Tennessee, I think Rick will win that state.
