‘Ishtar’ Lands on Mars ('John Carter' a colossal bomb for Disney, $165M writeoff, layoffs...)
NY Times ^ | 3/11/12 | BROOKS BARNES

-snip-

“John Carter,” a big-budget science fiction epic from Walt Disney Studios that opened Friday and flopped over the weekend. Disney spent lavishly (some say foolishly) on the movie in large part to keep one of its most important creative talents happy: Andrew Stanton, the Pixar-based director of “Finding Nemo” and “Wall-E.”

“John Carter,” which cost an estimated $350 million to make and market, and was directed by Mr. Stanton, took in about $30.6 million at the North American box office, according to Rentrak, which compiles box-office data. That result is so poor, even when factoring in about $71 million in overseas ticket sales, that analysts estimate that Disney will be forced to take a quarterly write-down of $100 million to $165 million.

The only porn queen I know of to ever have moderate success in Hollywood. She used to Co star on the “Dark Skies” series.

Charlie Sheen's old squeeze, Ginger Lynn [Allen], did a few mainstream things.

You notice I did not criticize the movie. I said that the dialogue in the previews was painful to watch, and it did remind me of a 21st century person not a 19th century person.

I thought Kitsch did a pretty good job as Remy. As far as I can tell, we now have Remy on Mars not John Carter of Mars. Given my love for Burroughs, I will probably crack open the old piggybank this week and see one of my allotted three movies of the year. I might have to increase that number because I am looking forward to the final Batman movie, the new Spider-Man, and the Avengers movie as well. Also Hunger Games because of the kids.

Lets hope Disney/ABC’s “GCB” in on the next ‘flight’ to Mars.

I wonder if Walt would be appalled by much of what his namesake company hat wrought?

It could be the sequel to "Jews in Space"

“Robinson Crusoe On Mars”

That was a great movie - demonstrating that having the best or most spectacular special effects don’t really matter if you have a good story and good actors.

if the movie was just called “Indiana Jones” instead of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” who would have seen it?

Exactly correct! This is one of those instances where a proper title could have meant the difference between a marketing coup and a total flop. Nobody except for nerds would have any clue who John Carter was. I only know about the movie because of the YouTube advertisement. If you put Peter Griffin in charge of marketing he would have called it "Rebel Guy and Porn Chick Do It" and it would have been a blockbuster.

I thought it was a prequel to the Sylvester Stallone movie, “Get Carter”.

Instead of promoting “Good Christian Bitches”, perhaps the studio could generate some cash promoting “Good Disney Bitches”.

I’ve seen this version. It was pretty bad.

Roger that. I had the misfortune of seeing this one, too. It stank on ice. Shame. I devoured all of ERB's works as a kid. Hate to see it wind up like this.

"Get Carter" - Ha!

Or maybe the backstory to Mr. Potter's banker sidekick from "It's a Wonderful Life".

Amazingly even huge flops don’t seem to keep the same actors and directors from being hired again and again.

Traci Lords, yet no mention of the 7th planet from the sun. Must be some kind of record.
