Sources close to the Gingrich campaign say preliminary "what-if" conversations are underway that could lead to a Gingrich-Perry ticket being announced prior to the Republican National Convention at the end of August.
Gingrich aides hope forming a predetermined ticket with Perry will unite the evangelical, Tea Party and very conservative voters that make up the core of the GOP.
As discussions got underway, two senior aides to Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who dropped out of the race and endorsed Gingrich, had not heard of the potential ticket and seemed dismissive. One noted that in the past, Perry has likened the Vice Presidency to a bucket of warm spit. Still, Gov. Perry volunteered his services when he endorsed Gingrich in South Carolina, so he may be on board if it's little more than a joy ride in a trial balloon.

At one time I didn’t think Perry would consider a veep position.
But now I wonder. He has a good job in Texas but I think he yearns to be a factor in national government. He has a lot of good ideas he wants to push.
Plus, he may be tired of being governor of Texas and not want to run again. It would be an unprecedented term as governor and people might vote him out, good as he’s been just to get someone new.
I think it would be a fabulous ticket. Not sure how much influence a veep pick would have for Newt now, but who the heck knows.

I share your concern, and think that Romney will likely get more delegates than Santorum or Gingrich. However, it also seems quite possible that Santorum + Gingrich will get in the neighborhood of 1,300 delegates, sufficient to deprive Romney of a 1,144 delegate majority.
Which means a contested convention.
Which means...I don’t know what happens after that, but Romney is by no means a lock in a convention in which a significant majority of delegates represent voters who pulled the lever against him.
(And that’s one argument against Gingrich-Perry. A Gingrich-Santorum or Santorum-Gingrich ticket might unite their respective factions at the convention, so as to prevail over Romney on a 2nd ballot.)
Two lies in one sentence doesn’t make either of them true.
Rick Perry wants to do something about the border.
Newt has some kind of convoluted plan about it.
But illegal immigration isn’t the big problem at the moment. It’s been building unabated for 40 years. Both Rick and Newt want to do something about it.
We have bigger fish to fry right now.
Why not have, either, Herman Cain, Allen West, or a conservative woman as VP, instead? IMHO, I don’t see a ticket of Newt Gingrich/Rick Perry as getting enough of the total women’s vote and getting enough of the total votes from minorities to defeat Barack Obama this November, and Barack Obama must be defeated, please!
I like it. Perry might keep Newt on track. And Newt has the gumption to push major changes (which we desperately need).

I think this leak is currently intended to counteract all the talk of Newt dropping out-which talk is intended to deflate his turnout on Tuesday. If enough media pick it up, it might serve that purpose.

Newt Gingrich’s spokesman on Sunday dismissed speculation about a potential Gingrich-Rick Perry ticket being announced before the Republican National Convention in August, saying the two camps have not discussed the idea “at any level.”
A report by Fox News cited “sources close to the Gingrich campaign” saying preliminary conversations about such a ticket have begun with the hopes that pairing the former Speaker of the House and the Texas governor might unite evangelical, tea party and other conservative voters.
But Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said no one in the campaign has reached out to Perry’s camp about a shared ticket.
“While there’s certainly a lot of people who are great admirers of Rick Perry on our campaign,” Hammond told CBS News/National Journal, “whether or not the campaign has gone as far as to reach out to Governor Perry about a possible VP ticket, any sort of talks along those lines would be premature — it would be something more appropriate for later on in the process.”
Catherine Frazier, a spokeswoman for Perry, also called the speculation “humbling but premature.”
The report came just two days before voters in Mississippi and Alabama head to the polls to vote in primaries that are vital to the continuation of Gingrich’s campaign. Perry dropped out of the race in January, throwing his support to the former speaker on the same day.
Gingrich frequently references his endorsement on the campaign trail, saying he expects to win Texas decisively with his help. But since dropping out, Perry has appeared with Gingrich only once on the campaign trail, when he attended a debate last month in Mesa, Ariz.
Oh yea hee is what the average American who watches the 6 pm news will think - an old white guy and a crazy guy from Texas who was laughed off the stage. Come on folks these guys are not in the race. They are getting less than 10% in 90% of the races, why them? Oh and Perry jsut gave Apple 21,000,000 in tax breaks to EXPAND their existing facility in Texas - he is one tough guy on taxes.

Perry is an extremely appealing candidate. Seeing his name in connection with this election revived an interest in me that’s been missing since he dropped out.
The people who like him (and there are a lot) REALLY like him.
The people who don’t are mostly uninformed or believe the MSM picture of him.
That would give him sufficient time to get over a number of his very narrow Texas takes on things that simply aren't acceptable nationally.
We think illegals should be sent home and he wants to give them low cost college educations. With a real unemployment rate still hovering nearer 20% than 15%, there can be only one position on the illegals ~ OUT!
I'm sure he's willing to go along with that now.
With the possible exception of North Dakota - which recently had something like the biggest oil find of the century - Texas is the greatest economic success story of the country. On Perry’s watch.

Newt was too clever by half, but he didn’t say we were inhumane ~ just that we wouldn’t adopt inhuman policies “but everybody has to get in line”.
