Mar 15, 2012 Newt Gingrich Says Illinois Primary Largely Will Be Romney, Santorum
ELGIN, Ill.After two days of campaigning in Illinois, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich told reporters that he believes the race in Illinois largely will be Romney and Santorum.
A poll last week from the Chicago Tribune/WGN-TV, showed Gingrich at 12 percent support in the state, while Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum were neck and neck, with Romney at 35 percent and Santorum at 31 percent.
Illinois congressman and former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who endorsed Romney for president, told reporters on a fly-around of the state campaigning for Romney Thursday that while he still considered Gingrich a friend he did not support his candidacy for president. Youll find that a lot of people who worked with Newt Gingrich over those years arent supporting Newt Gingrich. This guy is all over the place. You cant trust him. Theres always a doubt out there about where this guys going to go, Hastert said.
When asked if Gingrich would have wanted Hasterts support in the state, Gingrich told reporters, That would have been fine.

Excellent point. If Newt really wants to give Milt the shaft, there are some strategic places to make a real impact on him.
Illinois delegates... You vite twice, the popular vote and for delegate and alternates.
To get them lined up you have to start in September for the December filing....Where was Santorum in polling and money at that time ?
What Rick might be able to do is where there are a duplicate number of delegates on a cadidate slate get them to pledge to you and support those delegates. I don’t know who his Illinois campaign manager is, but that is one option they could use.
Not quite. If the Newt supporters on FR are any reflection, about half of them won't vote at all if Newt drops out, with a large percentage of the remainder writing in Sarah Palin.
I trust Newt more than I trust Romney. This guy can’t see the forest for the trees.
Santorum never gets any flak. Romney never gets any flak.
Newt has it up and all over from every whichaway, BECAUSE HE IS TARGETING THE ENEMY.
In complete agreement with you.The enemy has had him surrounded for quite a while but he doesn’t give up.Go NEWT.
One could question why, if the race was fundamentally between Santorum and Romney, Gingrich opted to spend two days in Illinois. Given that Gingrich hasn’t admitted he’s a non-factor in Illinois, perhaps this should be a signal to Gingrich supporters in the state.
I guess he does. There are too many like you who slept through their history class when it covered the last effort to walk on the moon. Such things as the microchip, the CAT scanner, Satellite television, kidney dialysis, cordless power tools, water purification technology--are you falling asleep yet? The spin-offs from the last moon project brought a wealth to our nation that people who don't know their history would see Newt's call to go to the moon as so much lunacy.
If we don't get up there, we will get another lesson of history when China sets up a mammoth laser weapon which can zap out our entire satellite inventory and anything we fly in the air. So, a moon base is a national security matter that should not be left for amateurs.

We're talking about the Primary Elections, and how to keep Romney from getting the nomination.
If Newt drops out, Romney will super-blast Santorum, and Santorum will wilt and drop out within weeks, leaving Romney uncontested. That is unacceptable.
Not quite. If the Newt supporters on FR are any reflection, about half of them won't vote at all if Newt drops out, with a large percentage of the remainder writing in Sarah Palin.
We thought by hearing from the Newt supporters that Newt is a fighter, and never, never , never give up like Winston Churchill.... so what gives ? Now he is conceding IL ? What happen to that Churchillan never give up fighting spirit that the Newt supporters told us that Newt had ?
Wrong. He's on the ballot for all delegates in Illinois.
I really like Newt, but it’s time to drop out.
I’d much, MUCH rather have Santorum than Romney. If Newt were to drop out, states like Illinois would most likely go to Rick.
Sorry Newt, it’s time to bow out gracefully.
Why was Newt shilling to Union textile workers in SC? Newt IS a great guy but he has failings too. Santorum is just as good as Newt but with failings. Do as you please.
We’ll see how Newt getting out of Illinois affects things there. Santorum will pick up most of his vote but not all of it. One thing will happen in addition to Newt’s votes moving around to other candidates when he gets out. There is a 3 to 6 percent inevitable bump that Romney is getting. The more competitive Santorum gets the more that bump erodes. These are basic sheep voters who just want to vote for whoever they think is going to win anyway. Once there is not a “front runner” they scramble and either don’t vote at all or disperse widely across the remaining candidates.
I didn't take that he was getting out. Is that from this article?
Well I don’t think he is taking his name off the ballot but I thought not campaigning there was the thrust of the statement made. It also seemed to be the theme of some of the comments but I may have been reading something into it that was not there.
“Time for Newts ardent followers to open their minds and ears to what is occurring and decamp him.”
The “ardent followers” are less likely to concede for the good of the nation because they are prone to infatuation as much as are the Romulans.
The CHRISTAN Newt voters I believe for the most part see the writing on the wall and despite their preference for Newt, will sensibly vote for Santorum in order to stop Romney.
The polls I saw in IL today show that Romney would win - because there are two conservatives in the race.
If Newt is really in this to stop Romney and he knows he cannot get enough delagates - he should FLAT OUT ENDORSE RICK IN ILLINOIS despite his intent to stay in.
If he splits that vote and gives Illinois that state - he will forever tarnish his name and go down in - infamy.
“The more the insiders talk, the more I like Newt.”
Me too - I voted for Newt here in Florida. And the more I like Newt, the more I hate the fact that he is going to get Romney elected if he doe not leave this race or flat out endorse Santorum in Illinois while staying in the race.
He has basically, publically said that he’s in it to stop Romney from getting the nomination - so why the hell not?
That would make it amusing at least.
Nevertheless, if Newt gets Romney the nomination, I sure as hell am NOT voting for the pathological lying Elmer Gantry pretending to be a Republican.
Hence, I embrace the apocolypse before I re-inforce the corrupt and ignominious behavior engaged repeatedly to nominate this sleaze they call Mitt. Secession I suppose it will be.
