The US soldier accused of shooting dead 16 Afghan villagers saw his friend's leg blown off the day before and is himself a decorated survivor of war wounds from mutliple tours of duty, his lawyer has said.
Seattle attorney John Henry Browne said that according to his client's family the soldier had been standing next to his friend when the blast happened.

Personally, I think they should give him a medal. Less nuts to deal with later.
After reading the article, one thing stands out. The shooter had an attorney in mind when he turned himself in. That means he was thinking clearly enough to consider his options.
Until the whole story comes out, if it ever does, I am not going to pass judgement.
We have a fair amount of people here that leap over the mental edge and commit horrible crimes.
I doubt the man will ever walk a free step again in his life, whatever the case.
If you are correct then he was thinking clearly at that time.
That also leaves him open for premeditation, which seriously ups the ante to 1st degree homicide. I'm not saying that I think He's guilty or innocent here, I'm just laying out the legal possibilities.
