Obama State Department set to cede oil-rich Alaska islands to Russia
Washington Times ^ | Monday 20th February | admin

Obama’s State Department is giving away seven strategic, resource-laden Alaskan islands to the Russians. Yes, to the Putin regime in the Kremlin. … The seven endangered islands in the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea include one the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The Russians are also to get the tens of thousands of square miles of oil-rich seabeds surrounding the islands. The Department of Interior estimates billions of barrels of oil are at stake.

The State Department has undertaken the giveaway in the guise of a maritime boundary agreement between Alaska and Siberia. Astoundingly, our federal government itself drew the line to put these seven Alaskan islands on the Russian side. But as an executive agreement, it could be reversed with the stroke of a pen by President Obama or Secretary Clinton.

The agreement was negotiated in total secrecy. The state of Alaska was not allowed to participate in the negotiations, nor was the public given any opportunity for comment. This is despite the fact the Alaska Legislature has passed resolutions of opposition – but the State Department doesn’t seem to care.

Territorial claims are made to anchor and vitiate them later. Its a little like international title by adverse
possession.

Miller is simply pointing out that Obama is unnecessarily abandoning a claim which could and should be advanced in order to gain oil exploration rights, either by direct exploration in the Russian straights, or by forcing the Russians to retreat from some of their sovereignty claims in the Arctic. Its a continuous flux of claim and counterclaim. China and Russia play that game for oil exploration, Japan and Norway for whaling.

Obama is simply punishing oil companies every where he can, at every turn. And he should suffer for it. No one cares how spurious the claim is, so much , its just that Obama is not following a pro active claim ppolicy to advance American exploration rights, the way other sovereign nations are.

Obama wants to pull on Oil companies, the same thuggish crap that he had done with General Motors and Chrysler, a takeover using public funds and a future place at the policy table to advance fascist socialism/unionism over capitalism and a free economy.

I am glad Miller is making a stink about it. Obama has a policy aginst oil companies that could be called “corporate racism.”

And here we are paying 5 dollar gas? The war between oil and Obama has been on for some time, and the oil companies will assure high gas prices, and these will help destroy Obama.

.Its a little like international title by adverse possession.

Since Russia, USSR then Russia again has put people, equipment , buildings, etc on these Islands for about a century, and we haven't, how do we have a such a claim over theirs?

Obama is simply punishing oil companies every where he can

On that we completely agree, but I don't see how it relates.

Just to expand on that, after a couple decades of working in the oil industry, I expect most of the major oil companies at this point would say "if there was oil there, it would be better to be Russian land then US Federal. If it were Russian, it would certainly get developed. Feds would just make another unaccessible park.

ExxonMobil is pumping oil from Sakhalin Island in Russia. ANWR still sets "pristine".

I saw this link on another thread:

http://www.factcheck.org/2012/03/alaskan-island-giveaway/

It is saying that the islands in question actually ARE already Russian.

Can anyone tell me if it is a reliable fact checker, or is it a liberal-bias-lie machine?
