Gingrich Says He Will Stay in Race and Stop Romney
NYT ^ | 3/20/12 | Shear

Posted on 03/20/2012 8:11:05 PM PDT by VinL

Newt Gingrich said Tuesday night that “phase one” for himself and Rick Santorum in the days ahead must be stopping Mitt Romney from getting enough delegates to claim the Republican presidential nomination.

Having skipped campaigning in Illinois and faced with mounting campaign debts, Mr. Gingrich said on Fox News that he was staying in the race because he believes voters would choose him as the nominee after rejecting Mr. Romney.

If Mr. Romney fails to get the 1,144 delegates he needs to wrap up the nomination, Mr. Gingrich said that “then we’ll have a real conversation about who can best beat Barack Obama.”

Mr. Gingrich said that he believes voters would turn to him as the best person to debate Mr. Obama in the fall. He said his repeated discussion about the need to produce more energy in the United States was putting Mr. Obama on the defensive.

“If the key is who can stand here and take him on head to head, I think I’m proving it every day,” Mr. Gingrich said. “He is losing this argument over expensive gasoline.”

At this point Newt needs to stay in and do everything he can to keep Romney from getting the nomination. I doubt Newt would win in abrokered convention, but that is not the point or goal - the GOAL is stopping ROMNEY!

If Newt were to drop out, ROMNEY and his attack pitbulls would OBLITERATE Santorum in a matter of days and the race would be over. AND AMERICA WOULD LOSE.

The only way we save this country now is by DENYING MITT ROMNEY THE NOMINATION any way possible.

I’m afraid we’re going to be stuck with Romney—that’s all I’ve been trying to say. I made the Newt people mad—oh well. None of these guys are a very good choice, in my opinion, although I did vote for Santorum in our primary.

Newt also knows the disaster that a Santorum win would cause. Newt know exactly who and what Santorum is. This every bit as much about keeping Santorum out as well.

The Santorum fanatics hate Newt for it. But in the end, they are too ignorant to understand that Newt is doing all of us a great service.

If Santorum had done the right thing before Florida and dropped out, I will guarantee that the direction of this Primary would have been a complete opposite of what it is now. We would have Newt nominated by now.

In all reality, Santorum IS the spoiler. He is a totally inept politician who refuses to understand the gravity of this critical election. He is all for himself, and due to a disastrous stroke of fate, we will all suffer the loss.

I say your observations are just that “your observations”, and carry no more weight than anyone else.

Its clear that Santorum, in reality, has no chance of beating Romney in the campaign. Newt’s strategy has a much better chance of knocking Romney out of contention at the convention.

Begging for Newt to drop out is the weaselly way you Rickbots will lead us to doom.

Now go blab that to some fictious self inflated audience.

I’m not a “Rickbot,” though he seems like the least dangerous of the three. I don’t like ANY of the nominees. Tell your hostile, name-calling, “weaselly” story walking.

and unfortunately FR has been a factor in this entire fiasco. The only thing Newt has truly proven is that he is a de-facto Progressive because this is exactly what a Progressive would do.

I agree with you.

It’s a bummer to see fellow FReepers tear each other apart over a lame, Republican presidential field.

I'm afraid the "powers that be" will designate our nominee, whether we want him or not.

I'm a voter not a hostage..I will not be voting for Romney. Never.

You Newt supporters are living in another world if you think that there is a bat’s chance in h*ll of his getting the nomination.

Get real. Whether you like Santorum or not, he is the only hope of beating Romney the Rino right now.

A vote for Newt is a vote for noone.

It does not take an alien RETARD to see that!

Do you really not understand how offensive that is? I think the father of Bella Santorum and the mother of Trig Palin would take exception to your characterization of people who disagree with you.

I think Newt and Ron Paul will still be babbling after New Years Day 2013. Enough already; you didn’t make it and you aren’t going to change that. STFU, and leave us to watch commercials.

What's the difference between either? Both will not be able to turn the ship...they have no tools to do the surgical stikes that are needed, let alone the brain power to make it happen....what have they got?

Newt has the plans, the will, the ability and the brains....it will be our lose if any but Newt gets in...neither Romney nor Santorum can do the job this country needs....both will line their pockets and play in the same 0' sandbox they've always played in.

So no ...will not be voting for Romney and less than an inch away from not voting for Santorum either....should he win.

My vote remains with Newt til the fat lady sings regardless.

Again. I was not using that term to describe “people who disagree with me.” The man I was commenting to used the term “lil Martian,” a nonexistent, fictional creature—THAT’S what I called an alien retard—Martians, from the planet Mars!

The word “retarded” is no longer used as a medical term. The word I used was “retard,” which simply means to hinder or to slow. It is also now widely used (as I used it) as a slang term to describe a stupid idea or person.

The word “retarded” has been relegated to the same area as former medical terms like “idiot” and “moron,” which are also very commonly used today.

I believe “special needs” is now the term they use.

How remarkable. You’re actually defending the use of the word “retard” as a pejorative. Fascinating. I see the two of us have nothing further to discuss.
