TOULOUSE, France (AP) - Three explosions were heard near an apartment building in southwest France where a suspected gunman who boasted of shooting seven victims in an al-Qaida-linked terror spree is holed up.

Orange flashes lit up the night sky with each blast near the Toulouse apartment building where police have been surrounding 24-year-old suspect, Mohamed Merah, since a pre-dawn effort to arrest him went awry.

Police assault Toulouse gunman's home Police in French city of Toulouse are assaulting the home of suspected serial killer Mohammed Merah. Three blasts were heard a short time ago as heavily armed police made their move. The Toulouse Deputy Mayor has confirmed the attack is underway. Witnesses say the blasts didn't sound like gunfire, it was more of boom. Police had just an hour earlier turned off the lights in nearby streets around the apartment in Toulouse where a suspected serial killer is holed up. Mohamed Merah has been holed up in his apartment after a pre-dawn raid (around 3pm yesterday NZ time) and is surrounded by 300 police.

I was wondering earlier - How hard would it be for this guy to set up an ambush? Run to a predetermined building, get surrounded and then have his brothers-in-arms launch an attack from behind while the police are concentrating on what’s in front of them.

Not that this is what’s happening. Just wondered if things like this were considered when surrounding this ROP follower.

A tidbit of this story I find very interesting is that Slick Barry Obungo appears to have directed the US Military to immediately hand over foreign nationals in Afghanistan. One report I read said the Afghans tried to turn this perp over to the US and they sent him directly to the French. Apparently the kenyan feels no need to investigate or get intel anymore in Afganistan.

Never let a crises go to waste, even if it means getting off a false accusation or two. Who knows - you may even succeed in suckering a few people.

GIGN are no fools. I suspect the 20 hour "stand off" today was spent securing the surrounding buildings/terrain.

Anna Warren posted the following comment over at MyPetJawa:
A French national of Algerian origin, he had been under surveillance by French intelligence for a couple of years, having "already committed certain infractions, some with violence," Gueant told CNN affiliate BFM-TV. Merah has spent considerable time in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Gueant said. Merah was sent back from Afghanistan to France by the U.S. Army, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said in Toulouse Wednesday. He said Afghan police had checked Merah's identification during a traffic stop, and as a result he was handed over to the U.S. Army, which then put him on board the first plane heading to France. But a senior U.S. military official gave a different version from the French prosecutor about what happened to the suspect in Afghanistan. The senior U.S. military official told the CNN contributor Fran Townsend that the French shooting suspect was stopped by Afghan forces who tried to turn him over to the U.S. military. The U.S. directed them to hand Merah to French forces since he was a citizen of their country. He was given over the French military by the Afghans and the French military decided to return him to France, according to the source.

Apart from the political dithering and my general reluctance to defend the French, I would say their counterterror folks are quite professional.

As I understand it, during the standoff today, the shooter's brother was rounded up, and we may not know how many more. The shooter did indicate that this was just the start of something bigger, which may just be posturing, but IMHO it's still in the best interests of the French to take him alive and interrogate the hell out of him.

Keep in mind that while France has something akin to our miranda warning, somebody arrested for terror charges does not get to see a lawyer until their 72nd hour in custody. If this guy is part of a larger movement, they could get him to spill quite a bit in that timeframe.

Shephard Smith is pissing me off royal on this one. He keeps talking about a “man” who admits to being a terrorist who killed 7 Jewish people including a Rabbi and 3 children. Not once has he used the word Muslim. Yet in the same 5 minutes, he has no problem identifying the American soldier who shot Afghans.

FR always offers the the most informed commentary.

Toulouse appears on the list of 751 Zones urbaines sensibles (aka ZUS). Perhaps someone with familiarity of the particular neighborhood/residence blocks will be able to confirm. link

The live link you provided is currently updating with the following:

The police apparently failed in their attempt intimidate Mohammed Merah with the 3 blasts and have stepped back since it is not a hostage situation.

From my perspective, it appears the French authorities are trying to wear him out. In this respect, Merah is outnumbered. Once they get their hands on him, that first 72 hours is going to be at the French investigative forces mercy.

Not painful enough by any stretch of the imagination, but it’ll have to suffice.

When I was at the gym Monday, one of the TV’s was tuned to CNN when they did a story about the killings at the school in France. During the entire CNN story, no mention was made that the dead children were Jewish. They were only identified as being an “ethnic minority.” CNN apparently couldn’t being themselves to admit there might be a religious motive behind the attack.

Mohammad Merah First Video and Photo out of France via blogger Eric Dondero @ LibertarianRepublican
"He says at the beginning of the video, playfully, "if you need a taxi." The narrator then says, "one sees Mohammed Mehri, who police suspect is the shooter..." He gives his age of 21, and then says "he makes a turn in his car."

Here are 10 Interesting Facts About The French Shooting Suspect

1. He was born in France in October 1988 and is of Algerian descent.

2. He grew up in a northern suburb of Toulouse in a neighborhood described as ridden with drug-related crime.

3. As a minor, Merah was often involved in theft and robbery, and was sentenced 15 times in juvenile court. He also served two short prison terms in 2007 and 2009.

4. He used to work in an auto body shop.

5. Merah is known to have traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan twice in 2010 and 2011. He has claimed that he trained with al Qaeda operatives in Waziristan in Pakistan, according to Paris prosecutor Francois Molins.

6. Merah came under surveillance by France's domestic intelligence agency after returning from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

7. According to Molins, Merah has communicated with the police surrounding his flat, telling them that he acted alone and that he planned to kill more solidiers Wednesday.

8. Merah's mother was asked to help police negotiate with her son, but refused, saying she no longer had any control over him.

9. Merah has exchanged gunfire with police, injuring two officers so far.

10. Police have found weapons in his car, and believe he has more stashed in his apartment as he continues to exchange gunfire.
