U.S. picks public health expert for World Bank job

The United States has picked a public health expert of South Korean origin as its candidate for the World Bank presidency, a job emerging market economies are contesting for the first time.

President Barack Obama will nominate Jim Yong Kim, president of Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and former director of the Department of HIV/AIDS at the World Health Organization, a senior administration official said on Friday. The White House would make an announcement at 10:00 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT).

Angola, Nigeria and South Africa have endorsed the nomination of Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a respected economist and diplomat, as a candidate to take over the bank when Robert Zoellick steps down in June.

"The endorsement is in line with the belief that the appointment of the leadership of the World Bank and its sister institution, the International Monetary Fund, should be merit-based, open and transparent," the three said in a statement.

It was a rare example of unity among countries often at loggerheads as they strive for dominance on the continent.

The United States has held the presidency since the bank's inception after World War Two, and a European has always headed the IMF.

That’s the next step in their playbook. Get corporations and financial institutions making their decisions based on new criteria that are strictly non-financial.

“Hillary Rodham Clinton, who officials said was the first to recommend Kim for the job”

Interesting as IIRC there was an article sometime in February, or thereabouts indicating as rawhide posted that Hillary was actively lobbying for that position.

the nomination of Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

I think that's the guy who keeps sending me emails about $20,000,000 his wife's cousin happened to come into when the vault of the national bank was damaged by that last earthquake, and if I supply all my bank data I get to keep 20%...

Seriously WTF......born in South Korea, university guy....how messed up is this, a "public health expert" for the world bank......

ANSWER?

Jim Yong Kim: Soros was a career highlight for me

Career high: “The high point was when we started receiving support, first from George Soros who gave us our first grants [to battle tuberculosis] and then we received a huge grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.” Kim’s tenure at Dartmouth appears to have been viewed positively by the student body: The college’s student newspaper, The Dartmouth, reported in August 2011 that “Out of 230 students interviewed by The Dartmouth, 118, or 51 percent, said they approved of College President Jim Yong Kim’s performance in his first two years as president.” 14 percent of those interviewed disapproved.

I guess they are only concerned with how money is spent not whether or not it is produced or retained. In the case of the so called world bank that money is mostly our money.
