Trayvon Martin case has been poorly handled, Santorum says

In remarks after President Obama made his first public comment on the matter, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum said Friday that the handling by Florida law enforcement of the Trayvon Martin case has been “horrible” and that the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law should not apply to the shooter, George Zimmerman.

“Well, ‘Stand Your Ground’ is not doing what this man did,” Santorum said Friday morning at a campaign event in Monroe, La. “There’s a difference between ‘Stand Your Ground’ and doing what he did. And it’s a horrible case. It’s chilling to hear what happened, and of course the fact that law enforcement didn’t immediately go after and prosecute this case is another chilling example of horrible decisions made by people in this process.”

Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watch captain, has not been charged in the shooting.

> Too late Newt has been spouting off the same stuff.

-Newt said to wait for the investigation. He has not said Zimmerman is guilty as santos has. Get it right, gg.

“I don’t get it......an Hispanic guy shoots a Black guy, yet somehow some folks are acting like it’s the White Euro’s fault.”

People are just taking cues from the media and now odumbo. This incident is exposing the shocking level of ignorance in our society. Few are even bothering to gather facts because “George Zimmerman” sounds like a “white” name.

The kenyan is going to run with this hard and unfortunately race bait the GOP into responding. Anytime we are not talking about the economy it is a win for barry.

We all have to be careful until more evidence comes out.

reports here in Florida say Zimmerman was stalking this young little kid.

reports say that this big football player (kid) was seen beating on Zimmerman. reports say it was a hate crime. reports say Obama said it was a local issue. reports say obama has sent the DOJ and FBI in. local news is making George out to be a nut case and hates black people tho George is Black/ Latino. Bill O'Reilly convicted the guy before the investigation. If he is guilty, the truth will come out and he will be charged. If he is innocent, he will be railroaded. He should not be charged until the police have investigated. Jackson is making this about race -so, is Obama.

Yes, this is bothering me to no end. People need to back off and let the rule of law deal with Zimmerman.

I want to forget about this and pretend like it didn’t happen but I can’t walk away with all the screaming for this mans head...without so much as a trial.

It scares the chit out of me and breaks my heart. I feel for Trayvon’s parents but I also feel much for Zimmerman’s family, too.

God help us all...

the local cops are saying the media is putting fuel on this which looks to be accurate. Jackson and Sharpton-exergize their base-divide the people.

Martin wasn't a little child as he's being depicted ..... He was a 6'2" football player, and he apparently attacked the Hispanic Zimmerman. People heard Zimmerman cry out for help..... .... If Martin was completely innocent, he could easily have explained where he was going and what he was doing instead of attacking the smaller Zimmerman.....and there is no evidence that he is not telling the truth about self defense?... ..And of course...then we have the usual suspects making this a race issue....the Reverend Al, the Reverend Jesse, and Obama---have crawled out from under their respective rocks and ridden off in the usual directions,.... without even the formality of an investigation by federal officers to justify their race-baiting chest-beating and in hot pursuit of whatever advantage they can gain....

....And Rick Santorum just followed them .....

....HE is NOT a leader! Idiot!

This is all about political and Media Drama for a story and political stance....sadly on the back of someones death

He just lost my vote.

I guess Newt did too since he said things even worse. You are running out of candidates to vote for. I guess you will vote for Romney then. One issue you don't agree and you throw the guy under the bus. Rick probably does not need your vote anyway especially tomorrow in Louisiana where he will win decisively.

“He did pursue the man in defiance of the police.”

Your comment is based on what? A 911 operator telling someone “you don't need to do that, the officers are on the way” doesn't constitute a lawful command from a police officer, it was simply advice. We do not know far more facts in this case than those we do know.
For example, we do not know for a fact that any officers were actually “on the way” at the time of the 911 call.

My experience has been that “suspicious person” merits an eventual drive-by of a single patrol car, while “shots fired” will bring a half dozen officers within a couple of minutes.

I've also noticed that there is little information being dug up about the deceased. Why was he suspended from school?
Does he have a police record? If this was a “gated community”, what was he doing there?

There is way too much agenda driven bias by the media in this case, and too many facts missing to jump to conclusions.

Yes, where did you get those photos? The family and their handlers have only released innocent looking photos of a kid who looks to be 12-15 y.o.

Sounds like Santorum is getting his info from MSM about this. he should at least read the police report and listen to teh 911 call tapes.

As for badly handled, I think the handlers are doing a fantastic job. They even gulled a Presidential candidate.

Maybe. I’m certainly open to the possibility that Zimmerman screwed up. But even in California, we try people before we convict them of murder. How do they do it in Florida? (Don’t answer that. I already know. To the Martins, if you’re looking for justice, consider these eight words: “Caylee Anthony could not be reached for comment.”)

At the VERY LEAST, ...Santorum could have deferred judgment until a complete and thorough investigation has been conducted........Instead, Santorum has succumbed to race pandering.

That would have been best....maybe a simple comment on the "Stand Your Ground" issue...but good grief Santorum once more shows how brazen he can be in his remarks...and I don't like that he's blaming the investigators either...that ones going to bite him back!

Our police have their hands tied enough without some stupid politician claiming how they've mishandled the happening before the job is even done.

Your sooo right...that's race pandering....but I'm really not surprised Rick did this....once again why he had such a difficult time getting people to support his run in the beginning ..he is like this...all for Rick...no matter how it make someone else look or the affects of his statements.

Thank you for posting the grown up shot of Martin. I’m so sick of them presenting him as some little innocent kid just wandering thru a “Neighborhood Watch” area at 2:am in the morning as if he’s out for a stroll.

I also do Neigborhood Watch and would have been watching Martin as well at that hour...and if he approached me while on the cell phone and then darted away that would have surely been suspect.

Also he apparently often missed school 5days at a time. So this guy wasn’t Mr. Model Student by any means.

Need to wait til all evidence and the “real” story to come out....not how media or politicians choose to frame it.
