Skip to comments.Trayvon Martin case has been poorly handled, Santorum says
Posted on 03/23/2012 3:19:52 PM PDT by AnybodyButBarry
In remarks after President Obama made his first public comment on the matter, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum said Friday that the handling by Florida law enforcement of the Trayvon Martin case has been horrible and that the states Stand Your Ground law should not apply to the shooter, George Zimmerman.
Well, Stand Your Ground is not doing what this man did, Santorum said Friday morning at a campaign event in Monroe, La. Theres a difference between Stand Your Ground and doing what he did. And its a horrible case. Its chilling to hear what happened, and of course the fact that law enforcement didnt immediately go after and prosecute this case is another chilling example of horrible decisions made by people in this process.
Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watch captain, has not been charged in the shooting.

He did pursue the man in defiance of the police.
I don’t think he should be charged with anything, but he did do more than just stand his ground.
Seriously, you think the Post would just make up quotes when Santorum could easily prove he didn’t say it?
Some Freepers take the media conspiracy thing a bit too far.
That name is probably why the media can hide it from their idiot viewers.
But if a “we need Hispanic voters” GOPE pol started speaking out for his rights it wouldn’t be so easy to hide it.
STFU, Rick. You don’t have all the facts and neither does anyone else.
“On Tuesday the 20th it was announced there would be a Grand Jury on April 10th. What in the L do these people want? Is not the rule of law good enough?
Or do we need instant justice... “
For all the injustices they (as a people) once endured at the vengeance of lynch mobs, you would think blacks would have learned something, but they have learned nothing.
What too many blacks are -really- “calling for” with their cries of “justice!” appears to be little more than a lynching-in-reverse.
But, hey! It keeps the discrim-industry’s “race machine” hummin’ along...
I am reminded of the Duke Lacrosse team rape charges by the national media.
Let the police do their job and the local DA do his job and gather facts and information.
Perhaps, just perhaps they did gather the facts and did make a decision that will be reviewed by other law enforcement agencies. In either event, the rush to judge in the media seems a bit focused on furthering one's political view points.
“Santorum should keep his mouth shut.”
Hey, Rick, what is your take on the three, yes, THREE black teenage thugs who set fire to the 11 year old white boy? Oh, you say you never heard of that one. I wonder why..... I’ll bet al sharktoon knows aaaaalllllll about it, Halleloooooya!!!!!
Santorum remains my guy, but I think what we're seeing here is native reflex rather than vote whoring - it's the tendency of north easterners to see southern whites as a bunch of trigger-happy cowboys. I suspect that's his regional prejudice showing. It ain't pretty, but there it is...
This is what you deserve. You get what you deserve, white boy. So spewed the attackers of Melissa Coons 13-year-old son, as they doused him with gasoline and set him alight. The attack on the boy took place on the east side of Kansas City, Missouri.
See my post #59. Is there now yet another incident, this time where the white child was only 11?
I thought it was two?
I like your point!
Ya, Newt made a similar statement about “stand your ground” not applying here.....read the linked article for his statements.
We have the one drop rule for blacks that more or less says that a single black ancestor makes someone black. I think Hispanics have that rule in reverse, whereby a single white ancestor makes someone white. Weirdly enough, Eva Longoria (star of Desperate Housewives) had her DNA tested and was discovered to have 70% European ancestry:
If that's true, he's bigoted, and I'm VERY glad he isn't my candidate.
I hate it when people try to get ahead of the curve (like Obozo), because it means it’s “all about them”.
Just so we know, of the 10 kills and 46 injured in Chicago last weeked, What color were they and the color of their shooters?
Wait... why is it that so many here are willing to give Zimmerman the benefit of the doubt when the media tries to hang him, yet it doesn’t seem as if the same doubt would be given to a police officer or federal agent involved in a shooting when the media tries to hang them?
I read a few articles and they mostly were the same. And then I read one where there was blood/wound on Zimmerman’s head and his back had grass on it - like he was wrestled to the ground.
So it was different that the other articles where they definitely were bias and how he had candy in his hands and close to his father’s fiances home.
What the officers saw at the scene and Zimmerman’s testimony, they didn’t arrest him. The media should give all the facts and leave out the bias to stir the pot. I doubt Santorum really knows went down but spoke out anyway just to be relevant.
It sure has been mishandled...like the parents and the media not wanting anyone to see the real kid or find out why he was suspended for ten days.
I don't think it was calculated - I suspect Rick holds the general north eastern prejudice about white southerners being a bunch of trigger happy cowboys. Which is worse - pandering or reflexive regional prejudice? I couldn't rightly say. However, as a Santorum supporter, I take comfort in the fact that there are so many issues on which I agree with him that the few issues where he goes off the reservation won't be a deal breaker for me.
As compared to...
So tell us, how did the wounds to the back of the shooter’s head occur? Since you know what happened.
Was the voice on the 911 call Trayvon’s or Zimmerman’s? Since you were there.
The only reason Zimmerman is getting any benefit is the presence of evidence from eyewitnesses and a 911 recording. Without that, he'd not be getting any benefit.
Exactly - the republicans give lip service to a smaller federal government, then decide to stick their nose in a matter that is a local and state issue. Wish someone would have the right principles and stick to them.
Lynching isn't all it's been cracked up to be. Here are the stats from the left wing reference source Wikipedia, featuring data from the black-run Tuskegee Institute, indicating that an average of 40 blacks were lynched a year over an 86 year period:
Not all lynchings in the United States were targeted against African Americans. Between 1882 and 1968, the Tuskegee Institute recorded 1,297 lynchings of whites as well as the 3,446 lynchings of African Americans during that period. By the 1890s and after the turn of the century, the vast majority of those lynched were Black people, including at least 159 women. Lynchings of other minority members, such as Mexicans and Chinese, have been shown to have been undercounted in the Tuskegee Institute's records.
That ratio between white and black lynchings isn't that far off from the ratio of white to black stranger crimes (i.e. crimes not involving family members or friends). It's not politically correct to say this, but it wouldn't surprise me if the vast majority of the people lynched were serious criminals, leavened here and there with cases of victims who were truly innocent.
The city of Sanford has all kinds of material up on their web site. If I were home on a computer I’d put up the links. The media rabble rousing is especially egregious given how much good raw data is there.
Step into this? Come on.
He'd done better juggling flaming chain saws.
Santorum must be a total fool.
Ya throw raw meat, ya better expect flies to land on it.
Who's his PR man? Chuckoo?
-Newt said to wait for the investigation. He has not said Zimmerman is guilty as santos has. Get it right, gg.
Thank you, thats the Picture I have been wanting to see. MY MY MY, how different then the one they are plastering all over.
“I dont get it......an Hispanic guy shoots a Black guy, yet somehow some folks are acting like its the White Euros fault.”
People are just taking cues from the media and now odumbo. This incident is exposing the shocking level of ignorance in our society. Few are even bothering to gather facts because “George Zimmerman” sounds like a “white” name.
The kenyan is going to run with this hard and unfortunately race bait the GOP into responding. Anytime we are not talking about the economy it is a win for barry.
He should have called you first.
Santorum is just chilling.
reports here in Florida say Zimmerman was stalking this young little kid.
reports say that this big football player (kid) was seen beating on Zimmerman. reports say it was a hate crime. reports say Obama said it was a local issue. reports say obama has sent the DOJ and FBI in. local news is making George out to be a nut case and hates black people tho George is Black/ Latino. Bill O'Reilly convicted the guy before the investigation. If he is guilty, the truth will come out and he will be charged. If he is innocent, he will be railroaded. He should not be charged until the police have investigated. Jackson is making this about race -so, is Obama.
Yes, this is bothering me to no end. People need to back off and let the rule of law deal with Zimmerman.
I want to forget about this and pretend like it didn’t happen but I can’t walk away with all the screaming for this mans head...without so much as a trial.
It scares the chit out of me and breaks my heart. I feel for Trayvon’s parents but I also feel much for Zimmerman’s family, too.
God help us all...
Where did you find those images?
Thanks in advance-
Newt take advantage of it? And do what... go from 8 to 10% in the polls?
....And Rick Santorum just followed them .....
....HE is NOT a leader! Idiot!
This is all about political and Media Drama for a story and political stance....sadly on the back of someones death
I guess Newt did too since he said things even worse. You are running out of candidates to vote for. I guess you will vote for Romney then. One issue you don't agree and you throw the guy under the bus. Rick probably does not need your vote anyway especially tomorrow in Louisiana where he will win decisively.
Your comment is based on what? A 911 operator telling someone “you don't need to do that, the officers are on the way” doesn't constitute a lawful command from a police officer, it was simply advice. We do not know far more facts in this case than those we do know.
For example, we do not know for a fact that any officers were actually “on the way” at the time of the 911 call.
My experience has been that “suspicious person” merits an eventual drive-by of a single patrol car, while “shots fired” will bring a half dozen officers within a couple of minutes.
I've also noticed that there is little information being dug up about the deceased. Why was he suspended from school?
Does he have a police record? If this was a “gated community”, what was he doing there?
There is way too much agenda driven bias by the media in this case, and too many facts missing to jump to conclusions.
Yes, where did you get those photos? The family and their handlers have only released innocent looking photos of a kid who looks to be 12-15 y.o.
Sounds like Santorum is getting his info from MSM about this. he should at least read the police report and listen to teh 911 call tapes.
As for badly handled, I think the handlers are doing a fantastic job. They even gulled a Presidential candidate.
Maybe. I’m certainly open to the possibility that Zimmerman screwed up. But even in California, we try people before we convict them of murder. How do they do it in Florida? (Don’t answer that. I already know. To the Martins, if you’re looking for justice, consider these eight words: “Caylee Anthony could not be reached for comment.”)
That would have been best....maybe a simple comment on the "Stand Your Ground" issue...but good grief Santorum once more shows how brazen he can be in his remarks...and I don't like that he's blaming the investigators either...that ones going to bite him back!
Our police have their hands tied enough without some stupid politician claiming how they've mishandled the happening before the job is even done.
Your sooo right...that's race pandering....but I'm really not surprised Rick did this....once again why he had such a difficult time getting people to support his run in the beginning ..he is like this...all for Rick...no matter how it make someone else look or the affects of his statements.
Thank you for posting the grown up shot of Martin. I’m so sick of them presenting him as some little innocent kid just wandering thru a “Neighborhood Watch” area at 2:am in the morning as if he’s out for a stroll.
I also do Neigborhood Watch and would have been watching Martin as well at that hour...and if he approached me while on the cell phone and then darted away that would have surely been suspect.
Also he apparently often missed school 5days at a time. So this guy wasn’t Mr. Model Student by any means.
Need to wait til all evidence and the “real” story to come out....not how media or politicians choose to frame it.
For sure thinking,,, waaaay more to Story, that has noy been put out. They must really think we are Stupid.
