Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson said Friday that he's grateful the rest of the country has sat up and taken notice of the tragic slaying of Trayvon Martin. But he can't help but wonder: Why has it taken so long for everyone else to recognize the chronic injustices that African Americans face?
"We're surprised that everyone else is surprised," Jackson told the Los Angeles Times. African Americans have tried for decades to get the rest of America to understand their plight, he said, particularly their beliefs that justice is still elusive in many parts of America, especially the Deep South.
Then along comes the Trayvon Martin case, and facts that are not in contention: Volunteer neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman pursued and then gunned down the unarmed 17-year-old last month, and never faced arrest because police said there was no evidence to contradict his claim that he fired in self-defense.
"I hope that this will be a transformative moment," Jackson said.
Jackson was speaking Friday morning from the Chicago offices of his Rainbow PUSH Coalition. He had just returned from duties in Belgium and Switzerland. He was in Geneva on Wednesday as part of a delegation of religious leaders trying to find a way to end the violence in Syria. Jackson was preparing to get back on a plane for a flight south so he can add his voice to the growing protests in and around Sanford, Fla., where Martin's shooting took place.
Jackson said the Martin case is getting plenty of media attention overseas, attention that is both embarrassing to white America and humiliating to black America.

The facts are not clear are completely known. Perhaps Zimmerman was overly zealous. Maybe he’s a vigilante. Maybe the young man got scared and lashed out at an inexplicable stranger pursuing him and things spun out of control. Speculations could go on and on. We should hope that cool heads will prevail and that the rule of law will be all that really matters in the end.
If you don’t mention this fact, perhaps you can convince blacks that blacks killing blacks is not a problem. And then blacks will keep killing blacks. Hmmm. It matches the goal of Planned Parenthood! Dead blacks are dead blacks, so SHHHHH! Don’t anyone say anything!
The democRATS had better be careful what they wish for. People are on edge, and many of us are sick of the false "racist" BS that they've been claiming for the last 3 decades. Instigating violence from an angry public is not a good idea. I think that there's many of us that won't let the left turn this country into Venezuela without a bloody fight.
There are no other reports on this case. All of the evidence is out there for the public to consume. There’s nothing missing, the timeline is complete, the story has been told.
Trayvon is not alive to tell us his side of the story, so the media is making it up for him. We here at FR always joke, “He was such a good boy. He was finally getting his life on track” when there’s a story like this. Now everyone’s on the bandwagon out of FEAR.
Stand up FReepers and do the research necessary to understand everything about this case. There’s nothing in evidence to suggest that this WAS NOT self-defense. I’m not defending Zimmerman, I’m simply pointing out facts.
This is a Bill Ayers crisis that they’re taking advantage of to the extreme, and it will not go away unless and until 1) Zimmerman is tried for something or 2) a full-blown race war breaks out.
I’m opting for the latter.

There is very little evidence, and Zimmerman’s own words count for little, as he’s the one being accused now. Agreed? Would he ever say the shooting was NOT in self-defense, whether it was or not?!

That's correct! So quibbling over details is trivial and stupid. If you want to have your opinion, fine, but your as bad as the media if you're immediately convicting him the court of public opinion.

I'm at a loss as to how you could think that way. Trayvon is dead. He can't defend his actions or give any testimony. Zimmerman's own words are the only evidence that exists for the entire case. If this ever goes to court, there's absolutely nothing in evidence that could support any sort of conviction outside of maybe using some choice epithets and bad judgment.
Put yourself in a similar situation. Would YOU say the shooting wasn't in self-defense?

The strong warning was heartfelt. I nearly got physically ill when I read about what they did to those kids. I followed the case pretty closely...delays, split sentencing...every trick in the book. NEVER reported in the MSM. NOT ONCE.
While Geraldo blames the tragic death of Trayvon Martin on his mode of dress, I believe there is another element that the MSM will studiously ignore.
Barack Obama has done more to divide this nation along racial lines than anything I can remember. “African Americans for Obama”, “Hispanics for Obama,” “Martians for Obama”, etc., etc... are just part of it. This guy’s efforts to take us the rest of the way to communism have angered many of those who may already harbor latent or outright racist tendencies.
While Obama’s anti-American behavior has little to do with his race, there are unbalanced folks out here who DO read race into that behavior. Once they cross that threshold, their warped minds can justify nearly any act, up to and including the killing of an unarmed black boy walking through his neighborhood. I fear there is more — and worse — to come.
