It was a pop top. For those of you too young to remember, early aluminum soda cans (pop cans to us mid-west Yankees) had a pear shaped aluminum piece in the top of the can that tore out with the ring when you opened it. People would discard these "pop-tops" in the beach sand. The sharp aluminum edge could cut your feet.
