It was never really “white flight” so much as it was business flight. Plenty of black businessmen got the hell out too.
My little town’s sole black man says his family lived in Detroit till the riots when his dad sold the bakery and they headed for Jackson where there were still factory jobs.

In the mid-80’s, I had a house near mine where 5 people from Detroit livewd. They had graduated high school & left.
They kidded bout the billboard which read: “The last one out, turn ut the lights”.
This was LONG before the ‘sub-prime’ lending problems.

I used to peruse some of the “explore Detroit” websites. From what was still in some of the offices and factories, I wouldn’t doubt that some people didn’t even sell their businesses before they fled.
In Egypt there wasn’t much difference ‘tween the 7th and 18th centuries. Truly.
If Islam fostered true scientific endeavors, air conditionaing would have been invented in Arabia. It was not.

The state shouold respond to Detroit: “Fine. Continue to run your city. But do it without any state money. No more welfare. No more “social services”. And no we will not insure pensions for any Detroit workers.”
I'd agree that a rational discourse is a waste of time, but he is completely rational and logical. He just can't say out loud the reasons he doesn't want the state to come in and run Detroit.
Those reasons are that Detroit has long been run like a third world one party state. There is no check on corruption, and so the funds come in and go anywhere except where they are supposed to. Even in Detroit, or maybe especially in Detroit, there is always plenty of money available to people who are connected. Well meaning outsiders see the poverty, and route even more money into the system, and it continues to dissappear, with no effect on the citizens.
The time has finally come for the state to come in and manage the city, and with that the "the family" in Detroit can't keep a lid on it with state accountants figuring out where the money is going. He is scared to death of this, but he can't say it out loud. What he labels "white supremacy" means "uncorrupted accountant."
The entire Detroit beuracracy, from middle management government jobs on up needs to be dissolved and rebuilt, with no one in the old allowed to join the new city. That won't happen. but the state needs to push as hard as possible. It needs as much tough love as possible.
And its fine if it burns down, the state should call that bluff. But what burns down, stays down.
