Report: Baku Granted Israel Access To Bases For Iran Strike
Jerusalem Post ^ | March 29, 2012

Azerbaijan has granted Israel access to airbases in its territory along Iran's northern border for potential use in a military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities, a report published Wednesday in Foreign Policy magazine quoted senior US administration officials as saying.

"The Israelis have bought an airfield," an official said, "and the airfield is called Azerbaijan."

Even if Israel doesn't use the fields for a direct airstrike on Iran, Azerbaijan could still prove useful for Jerusalem's interests in the region. The bases could be used as a jumping point for IDF search-and-rescue units, the report quoted a US intelligence official as saying.

That sounds like Joe Biden's sparkling wit. But it could be anyone from this administration, which is seemingly determined to defend its Iranian allies at any cost.

Looking at a map of the area, I can see Azerbaijan as an emergency divert following a strike, but there is no officially friendly air space between Israel and Azerbaijan. Israel might be able to convince Jordan and Saudi to ignore one over-flight to get to the target. We used the USSR in the emergency divert role for the Doolittle raid, but those planes and aircrews were then quarantined. [That was also how the USSR reverse-engineered the B-29, but that is a story for another day.]

It’s not just Israel that’s afraid of a nuclear-armed Iran.

Wow. The Azeris are Iran's largest indigenous minority, like 25% of Iran's population. Achminihitler could make life unpleasant for them, in a hurry.

Plus this action by Azerbaijan signals Pootin has been satisfactorily bought off. No doubt, given that exposing Baku oil to Iran will drive the price even higher.

Sooo, new moon in June, or will Bobo quash the whole show?

"Azerbaijan has granted Israel access to airbases in its territory along Iran's northern border... 'The Israelis have bought an airfield,...'"

Wait. Did they "grant" the Israelis use of 'their (Azerbaijan's)' airbases or are they granting Israel permission to use 'their (Israel's)' airfield?
Seems to me if Israel purchased an airfield that airfield is theirs to do with as they please.

Looks like some slight of hand is being deployed by the reporter. This is akin to reports that Israel is in some way 'occupying' the land of Israel; land Israel's descendants have bought and paid for time and time again and that God Himself has given them.

I'm just sayin.

You know Bibi is feeling oh-so-very “confident” in Obama’s assurances after seeing Obama in action backstabbing his own country with the Russians the other day when he thought no one else was listening.

In other words, the Obama regime has decided to protect Iran and its nuclear program by preventing such an attack. Now that it is in the open, Azerbaijan cannot base the attack.

Lou Dobbs gave this a lot of coverage with an outstanding panel including, John Bolton and another high level republican analyst whose name I’m not recalling right now.

Every one of them said the administration leaked this to try to thwart Israel’s action against Iran and prevent a ME crisis in an election year and the accompanying rise in gas prices. Not to mention letting Iran know exactly as much as the administration knows about what Israel is up to.

possibly. Azerbaijan was an integral part of old Iran, it only came under Turkic domination in the middle ages. The people, as i said, are ethnically Irani, but speak a Turkic language.

They are also mostly Shias, just as in Iran.

however, they were part of the USSR for a long time, hence the apathy for religion.
