Barack Obama and the End of the Progressive Era
American Thinker ^ | 4/3/2012 | Steve McCann

The people of a nation that has experienced unprecedented peace and prosperity for an extended period of time are often lulled to sleep, believing there will never be an end to their good fortune. Many powerful countries throughout history have floundered and decayed as they gradually descended into chaos, not realizing the ultimate fate that awaited them. However, the United States has been granted an opportunity to escape this fate through what appears to be a long-term disaster potentially turning out to be its long-term salvation. That event is the election of Barack Obama as president.

Over the past fifty years, regardless of who was in the White House or in charge of Congress, no one has been able to halt the incessant spread of left-wing radicalism in the nation's institutions, as well as the exponential growth of a federal government with its tentacles increasingly intertwined in the day-to-day lives of all Americans. As long as the people remained largely disengaged, the potential damage to society as a whole and to the financial health of the country was unknown to the vast majority of the population.

Over the past three years, this indifference has begun to change as the reality of the nation's future and the motives and tactics of those on the left have come into focus. But that reality has come to the fore solely as the result of the aggressive implementation of left-wing policies by the current administration combined with a two-year Democrat supermajority in Congress which allowed the progressives to pursue their vision of America unopposed and unencumbered.

The MSM and socialist democrat enabled fraudulent election of obama and his implementation of a communist regime has awoken a sleeping giant in the american people like never before. The author is exactly correct, there will be the back slashe of all back lashes in the November elections that will set the democrats reeling back 50 years. The anti american democrat frauds picked the the wrong country to try and change. I suggest they set up shop in Cuba or North Korea where they will be more appreciated.

I guess I don’t have the same confidence in our fellow countrymen.

We’re already making a bad start in this fight by throwing out Romney or Santorum to oppose Obama.

I kept looking for unicorns, sparkling stars and warm, soft, furry bunnies.

There aren’t any.

Defeating the Democrats in November does not end the progressive era.

It’s heart will still be alive and well in the media and in education.

This writer makes the same crucial error that most Republicans make, namely that identifying as a "Conservative" is the same as being conservative.

Just like no one with an ounce of sense believes that a murdering, pedophile, desert pirate is a holy-man, no one can honestly believe that a subsidy collecting, welfare check cashing, feminist, bureaucratic, union supporting individual is trying to conserve anything that the country was founded on. In fact, looking to politicians as some sort of key to fixing the mess caused by politicians is in itself ironically non-conservative.

Considering how firmly entrenched the Collectivist programs of the Democrat party are, and how loath "Conservatives" are to surrender those safety nets, elections are now just a matter of rearranging deck chairs while the ship slowly sinks into icy waters.

There are obstacles on the way to renewed liberty.

One, the soul of the average American is defiled. People are takers today, not makers.

Two, there is a huge mutual pocket-lining connection between government and Wall Street, UN, businesses and NGO’s around the world. See solar energy.

Three, the alphabet regulatory agencies of the Fed government are established, powerful, pernicious and nearly immune to resistance.

Four, the school system, K-Grad School, leans hard to the Left.

Five, politicians are politicians.

A spiritual revival and a return to the God of Israel is the only solution.

Baloney. I’ve hit several soft, furry bunnies on my way to work. They’re stinkin’ everywhere!

—This article is more optimistic than me.—

Me too. There is one thing in this nation that is amazingly like the story in Atlas Shrugged.

Specifically, the people that “dropped out” like John Galt did not all go at once. Each one had to be convinced that the battle was lost and adjusting your strategy to the new rules was an exercise in futility.

Hank Reardon was second to last, and he barely escaped with his life. Dagney Taggart was the last to finally “get it”.

There are a lot of Dagney Taggarts still in the world. The author of this article is one of them.

I agree with you and pretty much everyone else here.

Liberals are deeply entrenched in our important institutions, and, as Obama was actually correct in saying, we are no longer a Christian nation.

Even if our country becomes more “conservative”, it’s because the term “conservative” has been greatly watered down. Soon, our “conservatives” will be just as conservative as someone like David Cameron.

One HUGE reason Obama got elected in '08 was a very, very large money advantage.

Guess what? It's gone.

The GOP candidate will not take public funding this time around (like McCain). That's about $700 M for the GOP candidate right there.

In additon, the massive donations which came in for Obama are no longer there. Many on the far left see him as either week-kneed in implementing policy (especially if Obamacare is overturned) or on the moderate left have become disillusioned about progressive policy because they see now it doesn't work.

The GOP candidate because of the SC decision can now take corporate contributions and will certainly not take public funds thereby releasing them to raise far more than Obama.

The only advantage Obama will have this time around is his rhetoric which is becoming more and more slip-shod, demogoguic, and racist. We will now see him quickly lose power IMO.

No it’s not gone.

The Obama campaign has opened credit card donations from ‘overseas americans’ which do not require security checks like the three digit code or even if the people are real.

The author claims that “panic has begun to set” in at the Democratic Party.

Someone should tell the political gamblers at InTrade.com.

They think Obama is a 60-40 favorite, and their money has expressed that opinion for the last 2 months.

I agree with the article, wholeheartedly!

The Left did indeed play their hand too early. They thought they had all the elements in place for a socialist takeover, but they were wrong. The (now silent) Tea Party was pure proof that the American spirit lives on.

The Tea Party no longer needs to hold million-citizen marches. They made their point and a lot of us still feel the fire. (More will, if you keep the faith and spread the word, kiddies!)

I think the biggest item of pessimism is Mitt Romney himself. Listen to Newt in any of his speeches and think how wonderful it would be if he were the strong horse headed into the finals. He’s “got” it. But we’ve got it too, thanks to the Tea Party.

Get this freakin’ jerk out of the White House and we’ve made a big start on the road to recovery. (Try him and hang him for treason ... sorry, I digress.) Give the new Prez a working majority and we’ve made a second huge step. If we’re stuck with Mittn, then I see him as a caretaker until a real conservative steps up in 2016, but that’s a story for another time.

Once we have the reins back where they belong, the healing can begin. We’re more than ready (ya think?) to purge the education system of the Leftists, to burn down the MSM and get by with Rush and the bloggers, to learn what the Constitution really allows Washington to do and where the states hold the real power. The Left jumped too early, but they damn near had us! Close one!

But we’re getting older. We MUST instruct the future generations before the message is lost. We must tell the kids what the Constitution means and why it was written and how it still works.

November is the beginning ... or the bitter end. Let’s get to work.
