Visiting Marquette Univ., Justice Kagan tells of hunting with Scalia
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ^ | 4 April 2012 | Bruce Vielmetti

Though she's not running for anything, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan almost sounded as if she were trying to score points with Wisconsin outdoorsmen Tuesday during a conversation at Marquette University.

Kagan, a New York City native who had no experience with guns when she was named to the court in 2010, said she's now used them several times with colleague Antonin Scalia.

"He's made a huntress out of me," Kagan told Mike Gousha, host of "On the Issues" at Marquette's law school - and about 240 law students listening in on their talk. The justices have bagged pheasant and quail, and plan to go after bigger game out West this fall.

"He insists I'm going to shoot myself an antelope," Kagan said. That's fine with her, she said, because she's come to view hunting as "really good fun."

Displaying the ease and charm that carried her to confirmation, and probably makes her popular at cocktail parties, Kagan shared her impressions of her career and the court. She was in town at the invitation of Marquette Law School Dean Joseph Kearney, who said the two met at a conference for new law deans in 2003. He invited her last year to judge Marquette's 2012 moot court competition, which was held Tuesday night.

In an hourlong discussion with Gousha, Kagan talked about how her prior experience as a teacher, Harvard Law School dean, solicitor general and White House adviser informs her work as a justice. She of course did not go anywhere near last week's historic argument on the Affordable Care Act, and the audience knew better than to ask.

Would think that NBC/ABC issue if handled appropriately might stick a sock in a few mouths. A link to posting an FCC complaint was posted yesterday. Had trouble getting it downloaded. Site may have been busy.

Maybe we could make an even trade with Mexico. Send them your relatives in exchange for a few farm workers.

>> Don’t forget that Kagan wants to turn Scalia her way.

That’s a good point. However, wherever true conservatism is understood and practiced, it *works*, because it’s not based on emotion, it’s based on *truth*. At its root truth is the law of God and His creation. Therefore conservatism appeals to those who “hunger and thirst after righteousness”. Most intelligent beings with integrity want to know the real *truth*. And liberalism is a false “truth”.

I really believe that.

Therefore I have faith that if either of them “turns” the other, it will be Scalia turning Kagan and not vice versa.

FRegards

Can’t pick our relatives. I some entrenched and some who are just plantation slaves. People who use the word hate often are simply being argumentative. That normally means, they have no facts for their case. Freedom to go to another country. I usually ask what country they admire. It is always a country of death and of political repression.

Because of what I used to do for a living I came in daily contact with some pretty staunch liberals who were anti-gun.

If I discovered that they had never fired a weapon I would tell them that it wasn’t very open-minded, nor progressive to dismiss an unknown without first experimenting and then I would invite them to a range. Why not.

After the first trip at least half of them had a totally different opinion. Give me three trips to the range or an organized hunt and I can turn around a lot of opinions on guns and gun ownership.

Most people just don’t know what they are talking about.

Another thing I’ve found: Some of the libs I took to the range became a lot more open to all kinds of conservative viewpoints afterwards. Baby steps.

Kagan's already on the bench for life. I can't fault Scalia for making an effort to give her some life experience with firearms. It might balance her perspective on future 2nd Amendment issues. A trip to the range turned Dr Laura from a rabid anti-gun liberal into a pro-gun conservative. It was refreshing thing to see the transformation. No guarantee that it will work every time, but certainly worth making an effort.

I agree. Hence my tagline.

Like that: I'll remember it. Too bad it won't all fit in tagline.

Unfortunately “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” has a completely different connotation today.

And the little bluebirds that fly are probably up on something.

From the Lib Environmental Handbook.....

Kagan - Good Huntress

Palin - Bad Huntress

Deer Shot by Kagan - tasty gourmet flavor, nourishing meat, healthful exercise in the wild, helpful herd culling

Deer Shot by Palin - tough, gamey taste, gun-clinger, animal cruelty, endangered species, notify game warden and New York Times immediately

Have been thinking about this. Spent the day taking dad out on the town. He and mom were married 4-4-40. He certainly enjoyed the attention.
Not sure but don't think
Kagen has had many people pay attention to her. One on one quality time like parents and children experience, the type that forms most of our values may just now be developing in her life.

The story makes me think that a positive influential bond may be forming similar to that parental relationship. If so, it will enrich her life and change her opinion on many things in life.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elena_Kagan#Personal_life_and_education

Note the comments about her religios faith and her study of socialism in NYC.,,particularly the comment about studying subject is not believing it. She may understand where BO is coming from better than any other jurist on the court.

Could it be BhOs “Oooops” appointment?

EMT Do you know more we should know about her background?
