Breaking: NBC Fires Producer Who Created False Zimmerman Audio By Matthew Sheffield Created 04/06/2012 - 7:55pm

NBC News has fired the producer it says was responsible for creating the deceptive audio recording of George Zimmerman communicating with a 9-1-1 operator, according to the New York Times.

The network is still refusing to release the name of the producer, although according to Times reporter Brian Stelter, the producer is based in Miami and has worked there for a number of years. According to Stelter's network sources, NBC is still insisting the deceptive edit was not done deliberatiely. The network has refused to say how exactly someone could accidentally have edited the tape to make Zimmerman appear to be racially motivated:

NBC News has fired a producer who was involved in the production of a misleading segment about the Trayvon Martin case in Florida.

The person was fired on Thursday, according to two people with direct knowledge of the disciplinary action who declined to be identified discussing internal company matters. They also declined to name the fired producer. A spokeswoman for NBC News declined to comment.

The action came in the wake of an internal investigation by NBC News into the production of the segment, which strung together audio clips in such a way that made George Zimmerman’s shooting of Mr. Martin sound racially motivated. Ever since the Feb. 26 shooting, there has been a continuing debate about whether race was a factor in the incident.

The segment in question was shown on the “Today” show on March 27. It included audio of Mr. Zimmerman saying, “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.”

But Mr. Zimmerman’s comments had been taken grossly out of context by NBC. [...]

The editing of the segment was initially noticed by NewsBusters, an arm of the Media Research Center, a conservative media monitoring group. On March 31, NBC told The Washington Post that it would investigate. [...]

The people with direct knowledge of the firing characterized the misleading edit as a mistake, not a purposeful act.

While NBC has taken a good first step toward rectifying the situation, until the network releases the name of the person and explains its theory that the edit was not deliberate, its credibility is still under question.

Full Times story is here.

“NBC is most likely acting on the advice of lawyers trying to limit liability. “

I would have LOVED to be a fly-on-the-wall in the meeting where the Risk Management Dept. lawyer told them how many dollars they could be on the hook for, should one of MSNBC’s insane, hate-filled watchers do something stupid, let alone the damages for defamation they may already face.

Probably not obstruction of justice, since they didn’t prevent law enforcement officials from obtaining evidence. But very, very likely slander, and possibly incitement to riot, as well as most certainly an abuse of the public airwaves, and ample cause for the FCC to remove their broadcast license.

I agree. In fact, my wife, who regularly chastises me for taking conservative positions, is shocked and outraged by this, and considered NBC’s apology an insult to her intelligence.

NBC needs to have it’s FCC License pulled.

A common misconception. NBC doesn't have or need an FCC license because NBC does not broadcast. Rather, their affiliate stations do. It is the stations that have a FCC license.

It isn’t only the removal of the dispatcher’s question, but also Zimmerman’s actual explanation of why he looked like he was “up to no good”.

Thanks for the clarification and additional info. I heard the clip(s) on a late night radio show discussing the affair and perhaps missed that part.

I wish Rush would release his multitudes on the LSM.

See F. Chuck on the Mall or in front of the White House?
Get in his face and humiliate him.

Ron Allen in flyover country? Ask him why he aired that piece. The O’Donnell/Mitchell/Maddow Bimbettes? Let them know we know they lie.

Double for the local NBC affiliates covering the snow storm or the “if it bleeds, it leads” story.

There are a few network owned/operated stations subject to FCC licensing.

He is not the only guilty one. There is a corporate environment at NBC and its cable cousins then promotes and enables this type behavior. To select one low-level producer instead of a top on down coup is to create a scapegoat.

Networks don’t have or need ‘broadcast licenses’. Those belong to individual stations.

Certainly a case could be made that NBC meets the standard of ‘reckless disregard of the truth’ and is guilty of defamation and libel.

Respond by persuading Zimmerman to sue for libel, keeping the issue in the news and dragging NBC through their slimy operation in court.

Way back in the day when I was a debt collector, clients would sometimes believe their former clients who had stiffed them. They would believe their claims of racial slurs, threats, and various other things that we had not done. Back in those days we never ever told a client that they were wrong(even though they were). So we simply said that we would remove that collector from their accounts. Really all we did was change their dunning name.

Since the name of the parties are cloaked so well in this case...I really have to wonder if are dealing a little bit of a shell game.

They also declined to name the fired producer.

So, they claim they fired a producer. Sure they did.
