Wow.
As we often say here: you just can't make it up.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee took his first phone call of his new talk radio call-in show yesterday. From "Mike in San Francisco." Remember: the show is being positioned by the Cumulus Media Network as the conservative show with "more conversation, less confrontation." Or, as it is certainly being pushed in the anti-Rush Limbaugh media, the show for moderate Republicans that will Take Rush Out. RINO Radio, as we noted here last week.
But there seemed to be something slightly out of whack.
That something?
The very first phone call, arriving some fifty minutes into the show. To anyone with an ear for talk radio it had a startling quality.
Why?
No one seemed to remember to give the call-in number to the audience until the very last few seconds of those first fifty minutes. But yet… presto!... within seconds, Mike Huckabee did in fact have a caller on the line! Without ever questioning how that caller could have gotten on that line in less time than it takes Obama to blame Bush for anything!

The guy is looking for a paycheck and riding on Limbaugh’s coattails.
The difference is that Limbaugh has demonstrated tremendous courage. Huckabee is an empty suit.

I don’t watch his show on TV, and will not listen to him on radio........Rush, Mark Levin, Boortz and Savage....can’t stand Whinety..............

I confess I just watched a couple of youtube videos from a tv show that I’ve never seen called “cheaters”. I found myself feeling that both the cheaters and the person cheated on were merely the tools of the show and much drama was made from relatively small things.
Same here. I can understand this exec calling in. I can imagine them plan it. It’s sorta irrelevant though. The show will stand or fall on its own merit. I think it will fail.
But the core issue in this story, though technically wrong, is not all that dramatic.
Opie and Anthony caught Howard Stern using the same caller for two different segments, where Howard was plugging something like Howardtv and another product.
Huckabee has a very strong social conservative following. Same group of people who are voting for Santorum in this primary cycle. Don't underestimate how much of an audience there is for someone like Huckabee. It is not enough people to win a GOP nomination for their preferred candidate, but it is certainly enough to attract and retain a fairly significant audience. Will the Huckster be able to compete with Rush? Certainly not. But once they give on that fools errand and focus exclusively on the socon crowd in a different timeslot he may do fairly well.
He will NOT take away Rush's audience because he appeals to a different demographic. Real Rush fans couldn't listen to Huck for more than a few minutes. He'll create his own small audience of ideologically squishy moderate-ish “independents”. They can all high-five each other with their reach across the aisle less-confrontational more-conversational conversation.
Good luck Huck...You're gonna need it.
Huckabee Radio Show = the only conservative radio call-in program with only one incoming phone line.
He’ll be the next “Pumpkin Spice” coffee of talk radio [/obscure Starbucks seasonal coffee reference].
Don’t be surprised if you hear people call in and say, “I just don’t see how I can vote for someone who isn’t a real Christian.”
Bad start to a not-so-good idea.
