Hackers steal hundreds of thousands of Social Security numbers

SALT LAKE CITY – An additional 750,000 people had their personal information stolen by hackers, state health officials said Monday after discovering that the thieves downloaded thousands more files of data than authorities initially believed.

Officials originally estimated that about 24,000 people had their records stolen after a computer tracked to Eastern Europe infiltrated a server beginning March 30, then changed that number to 182,000 victims.

Health officials now believe a total of nearly 900,000 people have had their personal data stolen.

SUMMARY

ARE YOU AT RISK?: About 280,000 victims had their Social Security numbers stolen and approximately 500,000 other victims had less-sensitive personal information stolen in a massive data breach in Utah.

Where to learn more:

Utah ID theft-prevention site Health Dept. data breach site Health Dept. hotline: 800-662-9651

The information includes Social Security numbers, health department spokesman Tom Huduchko said at a news conference. Some files also contained information needed to verify Medicaid coverage, as well as names, addresses or other personal information, he added.

The internet is not secure, and it seems it really does not matter how secure someone thinks their system is. I mean if the Iranians could hack into a predator drone to land it in their territory and the U.S. and/or Israel could hack into the software that runs the Iranian nuclear facilities to plant a worm, it seems anything could be hacked.

IIRC, obamacare wants to "computerize" all medical records.

Oh, and how about states that permit voter registration online?

None of this is tamper or fraud proof

Systems can be hardened. The usual problem is HUMAN fallacies.

No fix for that yet.

These records won’t be secure. Not only will someone inevitably be able to hack into the system but probably some flunky at the gatekeeping storage facilities will make a few extra bucks by selling the data to private investigators . . . cell phone numbers and records are supposed to be secret but some PIs with insider access can get the data for just a few bucks, and no doubt they’ll be a black market for the medical records too once they go online with so many people having access.

Some files also contained information needed to verify Medicaid coverage.

LOL!

This is almost funny, since those are the "welfare" component of SocialSecurity/Medicare.

Are those hackers gonna be surprised!
Slim Pickings.

A nit:
It wasn’t obamacare. It was crammed into one of the famous stimulus bills. http://www.jsonline.com/business/104192429.html

It still sux. Important to keep in mind: Your records on paper are vastly more secure that these elctronic ones will ever be.

Those who argue otherwise are idiots and fools. You are trading security and privacy for a bit of convenience if you get hurt while out of town, going to a specialist, etc.
