Vin Scully to Miss Home Opener (50th anniversary of Dodger Stadium)

LOS ANGELES -- Vin Scully, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Hall of Fame broadcaster, will miss calling the team's home opener on Tuesday for just the second time in his 63 years at the microphone.

Scully, who the team said was suffering from a severe cold, skipped the game on orders from his doctor, a source said.

The illness isn't thought to be serious.

Dodgers star Matt Kemp sent best wishes to Scully on Twitter. "Get well soon Mr. Vin Scully!!" he wrote on the social media site.

Scully began experiencing cold symptoms last weekend while the team was in San Diego, and he made the decision on Sunday, because of those symptoms, to do the television broadcast only.

Scully normally does a three-inning simulcast on both television and radio before Rick Monday and Charley Steiner take over the radio broadcast and Scully completes the game on TV.

Scully, 84, was inducted into the broadcasting wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982. He announced during spring training that he will further trim his travel schedule, visiting only cities within California and Phoenix.

If you can't make a Dodger game, Vinnie makes you feel like you are there. Best broadcaster ever.

Took in my first Dodger’s game (at Dodger Stadium) in 1967 when I was 7. We then moved to Tucson and I’d fall asleep listening to my little transistor radio which picked up the LA station. Can’t remember the number of times I fell asleep to Vin Scully. What a sports broadcasting icon!

Per ESPN:

Magic Johnson is not planning to attend the Los Angeles Dodgers home opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday afternoon. Instead, the new owner of the Dodgers will be in New York City, where his play Magic/Larry is opening on Broadway this week, according to the team.

Johnson’s group, Guggenheim Baseball Management, entered into a $2.15 billion agreement to purchase the Dodgers two weeks ago. He attended the team’s Opening Day game against the San Diego Padres last week where he sat next to outgoing owner Frank McCourt, at McCourt’s invitation.

As part of the sale agreement filed in court last week, Johnson and his group are reportedly prohibited from making disparaging remarks against McCourt or his family in the future. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Get well soon, Vin! It ain’t a Dodger game without you!

L.A. may have had a lot of problems but it was blessed with Vin Scully (and, yes, Jerry Dogget) and Chick Hearn.

Vin’s acceptance speech for the hall of fame was one of the most inspirational speeches of any kind I have ever heard.

My first Dodger game was 1958 in the Coliseum with my Little League team.

He sure is. I met him once, in 1959 when I was 9 years of age, at a Dodger game at the Coliseum in Los Angeles.

Vin is a legend here in LA. God Bless him and I hope he feels better soon. Vin Scully and Chick Hearn are broadcast legends, we already lost Chick, Vin is the only one left. Feel better Vin I am praying for a speedy recovery

I’m a Tiger fan so for me it was Ernie Harwell who made the game come alive.

Vinnie made you feel like you were there even when you were there. In the early years at least one could hear Scully’s voice in the Colosseum from the hundreds of transistor radios people that people brought to the game. Made the game better.

Don’t forget Brooklyn and even Red Barber (although Red committed the sin of switching to the evil Yankees).

Just left a "get well" message on The Dodgers website.

Just not the same without Vin.

From an Angels fan.

Thanks for the ping here, FRiend (La Enchiladita).

I held my breath when I learned that Vin had missed the Dodgers' home opener, but as he now seems to be fine, I'm SO glad he's back up in the Dodgers' broadcast booth!

May "our" Vin enjoy many, many more happy and healthy years! God Bless Vin Scully...

Vin was a fantastic football announcer as well, he called “The Catch” in the ‘81 NFC Championship Game.

Vin was fine and dandy last night, calling the whole TV broadcast and looked GREAT. I could still hear a little bit of rasp in his voice... that was a wicked cold he had.

That's so good to hear! I checked the Dodgers' game tonight, but our MLB package gave us the Atlanta broadcasters instead. Grrr.... >:-(

When Vin Scully is broadcasting, there should be a Rule: Always run the Dodgers' Prime Ticket feed!
