This regulation addresses the prohibition of weapons at Virginia Military Institute. CHAPTER 10 PROHIBITION OF WEAPONS 8VAC100-10-10. Definitions. The following words and terms when used in this chapter shall have the following meanings unless the context clearly indicates otherwise: "Police officer" means law-enforcement officials appointed pursuant to Article 3 (§ 15.2-1609 et seq.) of Chapter 16 and Chapter 17 (§ 15.2-1700 et seq.) of Title 15.2, Chapter 17 (§ 23-232 et seq.) of Title 23, Chapter 2 (§ 29.1-200 et seq.) of Title 29.1, or Chapter 1 (§ 52-1 et seq.) of Title 52 of the Code of Virginia or sworn federal law-enforcement officers. "Institute property" means any property owned, leased, or controlled by the Virginia Military Institute. "Weapon" means (i) any pistol, revolver, or other weapon designed or intended to propel a missile of any kind; (ii) any dirk, bowie knife, switchblade knife, ballistic knife, razor, slingshot, sprint stick, metal knucks, or blackjack; (iii) any flailing instrument consisting of two or more rigid parts connected in such manner as to allow them to swing freely, which may be known as nun chahka, nun chuck, nunchaku, shuriken, or fighting chain; or (iv) any disc, of whatever configuration, having at least two points or pointed blades that is designed to be thrown or propelled and that may be known as throwing star or oriental dart. 8VAC100-10-20. Prohibition of weapons; exceptions. Possession, carrying, or storage of any weapon by any person, except a police officer, is prohibited (i) on institute property, to include academic buildings, administrative office buildings, support buildings, military training facilities, athletic facilities, barracks or any structure designated for cadet housing, or dining facilities, or (ii) while attending sporting, entertainment, or educational events. Entry upon any of this property in violation of this prohibition is expressly forbidden.

Very sad day for me and other VMI alumni. I plan to contact Colonel Curtis ( listed above) to express my displeasure.
As I recall, we counted rounds when issued and returned, as well.
It didn't used to be that way, even up to the '80s. But it's that way now.

How times have changed. I remember during my days at the Academy (a different one) that if we DIDN’T have our issued M-1 or M-14 in our hands or in our barracks room locker, the S would definitely HTF.
And upperclassmen could also have personally owned firearms in their rooms as well.

The difference is that VMI is not a military base. It is a college that is supposed to be dedicated to developing citizen soldiers to defend the Constitution...not trample it.
And then I got told he's not allowed to carry a pocket knife. Not even a pen knife.
We got hollared at in shop class when we showed up without a pencil and a pocketknife.
And when I loaned him mine to open the box, I had to teach him how to use it.
We're losing the education wars. The left is keeping our kids ignorant. And we're letting them.

Spent my Rat Year there when it was worth attending. Very PC and worthless now.
Quite frankly though, one should be trained to kill/incapacitate as effectively and efficiently at close quarters without a weapon as with one. Of course, they won’t be teaching those skills and attitudes at VMI either.
I don’t see VMI trampling on anyone’s rights. The students who attend VMI are voluntarily giving up their rights. They can also choose not to go there for an education.
Sounds like your neighbor and his son/daughter have failed in transferring some basic knowledge to the next generation. I’m guessing the kid knows how to use a satellite TV remote control and a smart phone, though. Did this kid also miss out on Boy Scouts, or was he too busy being groomed by the Diversity Police?
By that logic can they also ban a religion?...or take away any right that they want?
Remember one of the reasons VMI was forced into the coed path was because the DOD will pull ROTC from a “un Constitutional” campus. That was all that prevented it from going private.
