Police Detain OSU Student for Participating in Empty Holster Protest
Ohio State ^

Posted on 04/14/2012 5:58:09 PM PDT by Red in Blue PA

Ohio State University Police detained and drew their weapons on student-activist Mike Newbern for demonstrating his support for gun rights by wearing an empty holster to a candlelight vigil for Trayvon Martin on Wednesday.

Newbern, the president of Buckeyes for Concealed Carry, was taken forcibly into police custody just after 8:30 p.m., while he was standing at the front of the crowd wearing an empty holster, which was clearly visible on his belt, and with his hands crossed in front of his chest.

A police report released on Thursday indicates two officers drew their firearms before approaching Newbern and removing him from the vigil. They searched and questioned Newbern and confiscated his personal belongings, including his empty holster and camera case, before placing him handcuffed in the back of a cruiser for 30 minutes.

College cops are worse than mall cops.

I hope they end up paying him large sums of money.

Anyone advising this young man would do him a favor to tell him to skip student legal services, the ACLU and OCLU, and go directly to a private civil rights attorney.
An empty holster—incredible. Kampus Kop Komedy.

The university gets to define what constitutes ‘disorderly conduct’ and they can and will charge him with it, and punish him within the university (not criminal) code.

“The Constitution of the United States does not stop at the door of Ohio University or any other university,” Farmer said. “Students have constitutional rights that must be protected as all other American citizens’ rights are protected.”

While the university certainly has rules and regulations...
I doubt the university is allowed (by law) to publish a separate criminal code that goes beyond the application of state law....

Not to mention the intentional violation of federal civil rights law and someone's Constitutional rights...

Pass the popcorn.... this will be a good one to watch!

That d*** holster could have gone berserk and caused a real tragedy. I hope they put that holster behind bars for a long time.

It seems like a clear violation of the First Amendment, as well as false arrest.

A clearly visible empty holster.....and the rent-a-cops pulled their weapons on him!!!!!!????? Mr. Newbern needs to hire a good lawyer and sue the piss out of the cops, the university and the president of the university.

Every person employed in an administrative leadership slot in that university should be sued into homelessness.

The cops involved should be up on federal kidnapping charges.

It’s way past time when we the people should have started slapping the teeth out of educational administrations that put themselves outside the law or go around inventing laws to selectively enforce leftardic cultural-destructionist ideology.
