100 kids found on border coming to Lackland(AFB, San Antonio, Texas)

Lackland AFB will become a temporary home to 100 children who have been stopped recently by the U.S. Border Patrol, officials said Monday.

Details were sketchy, including when and where the children were found, and when they would come to San Antonio.

Brent Boller, a spokesman for Joint Base San Antonio, referred most questions about the incident to the Department of Health and Human Services, which said the oldest is 17 and that only 17 percent are below 14.

Boys make up 77 percent of the group, said Marrianne McMullen, director of public affairs for HHS' Administration for Children and Families.

“We're simply providing the temporary housing,” Boller said. Anything beyond that is somewhat sensitive and so HHS will have to speak to that stuff.”

The Unaccompanied Children's Services division of Health and Human Services is bringing the children here because many more of them are now coming to the United States than in the past. Ultimately, nearly nine in every 10 children are reunited with their families.

Under the arrangement with the Pentagon, the children are expected to remain on Lackland for around a month.

Typically, the agency has served 7,000 to 8,000 children annually over the past three years, but since October more than 5,000 have entered the program.

In all, the agency cares for those children in 13 states, providing housing, health care and psychiatric treatment.

“We're just managing a lot more kids than we have in the past,” a federal official said, speaking on background.

The kids most often are teenagers, two-thirds of them from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Roughly eight in every 10 are boys, with 83 percent older than 14.

They often leave their homes and communities to find family members already in the United States, but some are fleeing abusive surroundings and exploitation.

In some cases, the children are victims of human traffickers, a situation the official said creates “very much risk.”

A one-paragraph statement issued today by the U.S. Northern Command, which oversees domestic security, said the Pentagon had agreed to provide temporary housing for the unaccompanied children.”

Boller would not say where the children would stay on Lackland, referring all other questions to HHS.

This is not the first time a San Antonio base has been used for displaced people. Nearly seven years ago, Building 171 on Lackland's Kelly Annex was used to house victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The base has a variety of housing, much of it used by thousands of trainees. Joint Base San Antonio oversees Lackland and two other installations, Fort Sam Houston and Randolph AFB.

Keep 'em the full 6 weeks, except for the re-cycles and put 'em in uniform.

100 kids is 2 full basic flights. SSgt. Briones (my TI, back in the day) would have them straightend out.

Run 'em through anyway, except for M-16 qual. They can use that free time to do a little marching and running. ;)

It's been a while. ;)

Congrats to your grandson. I do know AF basic is more difficult than when I went through. They now use Army standards for PT.

Look on the bright side, maybe only two-thirds of them are gang recruits.

The other third might provide needed services as maids, hookers, lawn care specialists and Democrat voters. < / sarcasm >

Even your TI couldn’t do anything with these bits of detritus on two legs. Abused, criminalized, AND TRAUMATIZED - THESE ARE JUST THE SORT OF “KIDS” WHO GROW UP TO BECOME UNACULTURATED CRIMINALS. sEND ‘EM BACK WHERE THEY CAME, BUT MAKE SURE THEY ARE MARK, CHIPPED, OR EAR NOTCHED SO THAT THEY CAN BE DISPATCHED THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE FOUND HERE.

apologies about the caps on, but don’t have time to retype.
