What’s wrong with eating horsemeat? Not my thing, but it’s an old American tradition if you can believe it. Anyway, I suspect the market is overseas.

Ick. Horsemeat is definitely not for me. Too similar to eating dogs or cats IMO.

That is actually needed.
Ongoing drought and ongoing economic crisis.
Can't feed 'em, can't sell 'em.
A lot of people just turn 'em loose. That is something you don't want the bumper of your Prius to find at 70 MPH in the middle of the night.

hoping to head off what they fear could be a series of slaughterhouses applying to produce horse meat Horses produce horse meat, slaughterhouses process it.
Slaughtering horses is better than letting them starve to death or letting taxpayers spend millions to keep Mustangs alive in feeding pens.

First, the political/regulator class bans the slaughter of horses for dog food (according them, years ago), then they okay the large scale slaughtering of horses to feed you.

Just one more group of people thinking they have the right to impose their food choices on another group of people. No different than the left telling people they can’t eat pate or sugar.

The politically correct thing to do here would be for a fancy wancy foodie woodie like Jeremiah Tower or Alice Waters or Mario Batagli, etc., to open a little boutique-y organic horse meat “charcuterie,” which is ok, as opposed to a slaughterhouse, which is not.
Get a few up and running and the opposition will have a hard time just targeting one.
I don’t advocate cruelty to the horses or anything but it is no sin to eat it and I don’t like us making certain animals “off limits” because we project our humanity upon them.

Lewis and Clark ate plenty of horses, but that was 200+ years ago.

Some writer that I read—I think it was Solzhenitsyn—once described a meat pie made from horse and rabbit meat in equal proportions—one horse to one rabbit.

Nothing wrong with eating anything edible except people, the only real moral concerns are the reasons, the scarcity and the sources. The BLM is supposed to control the population of feral mustang herds on public lands, there will be more surplus animals then what can be found homes for. The key word in the BLM is management, even if they often are really bad at it.

I remember many years ago when Jack in the Box was importing horsemeat from Australia for its burgers.
