Obama Once Needed 'to Take a Subway or a Bus Just to Find a Fresh Piece of Fruit By Penny Starr April 18, 2012
(CNSNews.com) - Barack Obama's vision as president is shaped by the fact that he knows what "it's like to take a subway or a bus just to find a fresh piece of fruit in a grocery store," Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan said last week.
Donovan seemed to be suggesting that the president had once lived in what First Lady Michelle Obama now refers to as a "food desert"--a place without a nearby supermarket. The First Lady has launched an initiative to eliminate these places.
Why has all this work been such a priority for the president and every one of us in the administration? Donovan said. Because he knows what you know: He knows what its like to walk the halls of public housing because hes worked there.
He knows what its like to walk the streets of some of our cities poorest neighborhoods because hes lived there, Donovan said. What its like to take a subway or a bus just to find a fresh piece of fruit in a grocery store.
Donovan also said the president had to wonder about whether he could afford a college education or decent health care or be judged unfairly.

"Fresh piece of fruit" is slang for what?
This is becoming pathological.
Both of them are on some kind of power trip.
A better question is, when will they leave?
As usual, the jokes just write themselves...
How far to get some dog meat?
The government needs to fix this pronto. Does the First Lady know about this?
From the title I thought this might be another Larry Sinclair article.
“The First Lady has launched an initiative to eliminate these places”
What, she’s gonna be a retail grocer? Good. About time someone in their family started producing something.
Larry Sinclair to the white courtesy phone, please.. Mr. Sinclair please pick up the white courtesy phone.
The term “food desert” drives me crazy! I grew up 20 miles from the nearest Kroger store and NO there wasn’t public transportation to tke us there!
Kenya.
Indonesia.
The more “ate dog as a child” and “lived in squalor” stories, the more people will see that he’s a foreigner.
Shocking just shocking. Could you imagine in this modern age, people have to travel to the grocery store. Why that’s terribel why I want to make sure my grandkids don’t live in a food desert that would be terrible. We should make the evil capitalist bring us food whenever we want it. Food desert my foot...
You’re right, they’re deluded. There are produce stores and bodegas on nearly every corner in upper Manhattan, even in Harlem. You can see it in Obama’s autobiographies - he’s ashamed of his origins, and tries to imagine an alternative life story that better suits his own vanity and sense of self-importance.
My heart just bleeds when I read about poor poverty stricken Obama.
Now lets get past the fruit and let’s hear him tell us who paid for his education,How did he get money enough to go to 3 colleges—high priced colleges—who paid for his trip to pakistan and where did he get his passport.
Grocery stores usually LIKE to locate where there is a lot of people and a shortage of competition
Maybe there is some other reason they don’t want to locate in those neighborhoods?
(hint- it’s not racism, everyone’s money is the same color)
How about because they don’t like getting shoplifted out of business?
I had a family member who owned a store- although it was in an upscale mall that was 90% white customers, 90% of the shoplifters were minority. She had to stop taking checks from everyone so as to not have to ‘discriminate’ against certain groups. She had to plaster the place with mirrors and video cams, to discourage theft- rather than catch them and spend all her time in court trying to prosecute, which usually failed.
They don’t have a cafeteria at Columbia University? He took the subway in Honolulu? Next the story will be that he was so poor he had to steal skittles and ice tea to survive.
I live 11 miles from town. Cry me a river, liberal.
Ah wuz born a po black child.
That’s nothing. I used to have to walk two miles through driving snow, uphill both ways, to get to school. When I was a kid, we couldn’t afford real cereal...we ate wood and rocks.
Well what was it, the subway or a bus? If he can’t remember the form of transportation then maybe it wasn’t a piece of fruit he was after :)
I have heard of one time he had to ride in a limousine to get a “piece of fruit”, too.
“The term ‘food desert’ drives me crazy! I grew up 20 miles from the nearest Kroger store and NO there wasnt public transportation to tke us there!”
Yeah, but you were probably in the suburbs. This is an innercity problem, with (as always) black women and children and other vulnerable groups hit the hardest. It’s not their fault, as greedy capitalists gouge them with high prices and low quality because...um, they’re racist.
Right.
Once I had to work in a dirty, dangerous factory to get through college.
PAAALLLLEEEASE!!
If things keep going the way the Marxist wants, we will drive 15 miles on a bike, wait in line for 3 days just to get FOOD!
Was his mother so lazy she didn’t go grocery shopping? If he was older and living on his own, what the heck is wrong with taking public transportation to pick up some groceries? I thought that’s what we were supposed to do, being good little environmentalists and all.
the fact that he knows what “it’s like to take a subway or a bus to Boystown just to find a fresh piece of hanging fruit”.
I live 3 1/2 miles from the nearest store. I need to drive, ‘cause there aren’t any buses or subways.
BFD Obeyme.
If you live within the proximity of a subway station, chances are there’s a grocery store nearby. What an idiot.
By the way, I realize viewing things from the Founders’ perspective is overused, but think about it for a second. Can you imagine Madison’s reaction to being told that in 240 years or so the federal government will worry about whether or not there’s a grocery store within a mile of your house? They had to walk a mile to go to the bathroom, for the love of Obama.
Onlookers shrug their shoulders and figure her for just another nut case kook, as they continue shopping.
Few minutes later, a man runs through the mall screaming : OBAMA JUST CAME IN TO TOWN TO CAMPAIGN....LOCK UP YOUR DOGS...OBAMA'S IN TOWN. LOCK UP YOUR DOGS.
The mall immediately emptied out and the traffic was backed up for an hour.
Is that headline some sort of gay talk or what?
I know what he means. I grew up poor too. We had to drive all the way to town, 15 miles, to buy coconuts! If only the government had placed a fruit stand within walking distance, perhaps the transmission on our ‘55 Plymouth would have lasted longer.
Amazon.com will deliver groceries, but I don’t know if they accept EBT cards.
How far did he have to walk for his arugula?
Do they have subway trains in Hawaii?
I still live 20 miles from the one and only grocery store in town and 6 miles from the one and only convenience store around here. Of course, no public transportation either. Yet, somehow, without Moochelle butting her nose into it, four generations have managed not to starve here.
Nikita Kruschev had to fly half way around the world for corn flakes. That doesn’t mean his redesign of Soviet agriculture to force the attepted raising of corn in Russia was a good idea.
I'm willing to bet they didn't go the whole mile.
You were lucky. We lived in a hole in the ground covered by a piece of tarpolin, and we were happy to have it!
Don’t burn the local stores down and they will be there for you. Just take a look at Mayor Marion Barry’s recent statements on Asian store owners and you will understand why “food deserts” will continue to exist well after Barry and Michelle leave office.
You’ll live in a highrise tenement,
and you’ll take public transportation to your assigned work farm.
Federalize all food Production and Sales. Its the only way to make sure everyone is eating what MOOOOOChelle deems is proper for all us serfs.
Because of the “food deserts” that the evil white man created by closing down businesses in Eric Holder’s peoples’ neighborhoods that got robbed and shoplifted and mugged into bankruptcy.
Thankfully he figured out that its easier just to yell “Here boy” and dinner will come over to you...
And now, to get even for his ‘deprived youth’ he sends an Air Force Cargo plane a thousand miles to bring him a pizza from his old neighborhood.
He is such a punk.
It it hadn’t been for some rich person wanting to keep all of his money, they could have used his money to put a fruit stand closer to your home. So it is the fault of the rich man.
But if you need rolling papers, 40oz beers and packaged/prepared food, most of these neighborhoods have 24/7 stores every other block that sell it. There are also far more liquor stores there and they would also be 24/7 if the government allowed it.
“Thats nothing. I used to have to walk two miles through driving snow, uphill both ways, to get to school. When I was a kid, we couldnt afford real cereal...we ate wood and rocks.”
Dad? Is that you?
Lol...I heard almost the exact same phrase growing up!
