TAMPA Frustrated by a Florida law that blocks all local regulation of guns, Mayor Bob Buckhorn expects to reach out to Gov. Rick Scott for help keeping concealed firearms away from protests during the Republican National Convention.
The 2011 state law pre-empts the ability of cities and counties to pass any laws regulating firearms or ammunition.
So while Tampa plans to ban a wide range of weapons (clubs, switchblades, Mace) and things that could be used as weapons (chains, glass bottles, water pistols) outside the convention, it cannot prohibit guns carried with a concealed weapons permit.

I’m personally opposed to disarming Democrats the same as I am opposed to disarming any other Americans.
Tampa is wrong on this and needs to keep their mittens off of the 2nd Amendment.
More constitutional infringement.
This isn’t a surprise. Tampa’s growing into a very Liberal city.
The fact is that Democrats oppose the Constitution and if they oppose the Constitution, they should not be granted their First, Second or Fourth Amendment Rights during Republican Convention.
Agreed.
Security will be a bigger headache than usual. These creeps have visions of Chicago 1968 dancing in their addled heads.
I’m willing to bet that there is more gun related violence at the DNC compared to the RNC.
I have long held that Dimm's support gun control because it creates an environment less hostile to union (and other) thugs. If their OWS buddies start breaking windows and damaging property in Tampa, I would strongly support direct, armed intervention by property owners.
What hoplophobic twaddle. What a panty-p*ssing fraidy cad. Buckhorn should be impeached for conspiracy to infringe civil rights under color of law.
I wonder if the cops and secret service agents will have guns.
I'll translate - "Frustrated by a Florida Law that blocks local petty tyrants from getting their JBTs to strip the rights of citizens."
My mayor, and the same guy who created the first-in-the-state domestic partnership registry. I sent him an email letting him know he’s “lost my support” and to publicly reconsider his request to Gov. Scott.
The citizen needs to be armed most when Urban Ferals are on the prowl. Conventions draw Ferals as roadkill draws vultures and flies.
The article is misreporting.
The state has looong preempted local laws. It was just that local busybodies ignored the law and passed ordinances.
So the state passed a law stating that if you as a local politician passed these feel good laws then you the local politician were committing a CRIME and subject to jail.
With a gun-grabbing democrat mayor!
You think they’d stoop to staging a Trayvon 2.0 incident outside the RNC?
