For nearly two months, George Zimmerman has been largely a cipher, a riddle whose voice has been heard only in 911 calls reporting a young man acting "real suspicious."

On Friday, the world learned more about Zimmerman as he, his wife and parents testified during a hearing in Sanford, Florida, to decide whether he would be released on bond while awaiting trial on a second-degree murder charge in the February 26 death of Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman's wife depicted him as a man she has never seen angry. His father said he was a truthful man who had long been concerned with helping others. And his mother said he had organized a campaign to "get justice" for a homeless man who had been beaten in Sanford, as well as mentoring a 14-year-old African-American boy from a dangerous Orlando neighborhood.

Zimmerman has acknowledged killing Martin during an encounter in his Sanford neighborhood, saying he shot in self-defense. Critics have depicted the Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer as a racist who profiled Martin because he was African-American.

His family said nothing could be further from the truth.

"I know that he is very protective of people, very protective of homeless people and also of children" -- regardless of their race, Gladys Zimmerman said in testimony meant to prove to Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. that Zimmerman would not be a threat to the community if allowed to leave jail while awaiting trial.

She said he has been a mentoring the 14-year-old for three years even though the program he had joined shut down after only nine months because of the economy.

She said she begged him not to go because of the danger.

"He said, 'Mom, if I don't go, they don't have nobody,'" Gladys Zimmerman said....

I watched the whole bail hearing today, start to finish. Bet nobody else posting can make that statement, only hurl insults it seems.

I get informed first, spout my opinions later. I don’t care who he is, my tagline is accurate and there was nothing believable in anything he said. Authorities say stay in your car, you stay in your car. Guess thinking like that makes me a liberal.

Did you miss the part where the investigator admitted in court that they had no evidence whatsoever that Z wasn't going back to his vehicle as was suggested to him by the non-emergency dispatcher?

O'MARA: My question was do you have any evidence to contradict or that conflicts with his contention given before he knew any of the evidence that would conflict with the fact that he stated I walked back to my car?

I just made a donation as well for the same reason.
I checked out the past crimes of Zimmerman on the web - 2 arrests on the same day in July 2006 —one for resisting arrest with violence (hitting a police officer - closed with no action) and one for resisting arrest with no violence (closed with no action). What the heck does that mean? I guarantee you if this was a serious crime of assaulting a cop, it wouldn’t have just been closed. I found this on a website that investigates police brutality and misconduct.

He was on his way home to watch the game.

He had more than enough time to get back home once Zimmerman lost sight of them. That is established by the times of the 911 calls.

He didn't get back home because he was angry and Zimmerman and wanted to teach him a lesson.

The prosecution admits it has no evidence that Zimmerman started the physical altercation. The physical evidence, photos of Zimmerman's head bleeding and a witness say Martin was on top of Zimmerman beating him severely. If you're being beaten was badly as Zimmerman was, you have right to defend yourself, with lethal force if necessary.

The investigator misspoke. Not a very bright guy with a bad toupee. You are the bs’er here, relying on the conjecture of others instead of carefully listening to the evidence. At least wait for the affirmative defense hearing and then have the character to apologize for your baseless insults.

I think that’s exactly what they did. They filed the charge— and took it up to 2nd degree murder precisely to placate the mobs. I don’t know if they can have manslaughter as a lesser included charge or not, in Florida. But they are probably counting on that as their escape from this madness. The facts just won’t support 2nd degree. I thought the prosecutor really made a mistake today by getting too far ahead of himself with the “facts” of the case. Juries decide what the facts are, not prosecutors. He came off looking like a fool, and unprepared

Either way, it's a despicable miscarriage of justice to arrest someone for political ends or to "placate the mobs". If the mobs need "placating" it should be done with rubber bullets, fire hoses, mace, etc. If that doesn't work, due to them being "un-placatable", it might be time to consider real bullets. When you give in to scum like this, you set bad precedents 9over and over again) and it eventually becomes the "norm" to screw a good person to "placate" the mobs.
