Montana's Governor Schweitzer(D): "Romney’s father from ‘polygamy commune’ in Mexico"
Helena Independent Record ^ | 4.21.12 | Mike Dennison

Posted on 04/21/2012 4:44:33 PM PDT by tuckrdout

.Gov. Brian Schweitzer, talking Friday to a national news website, said Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney might shy from talking about his family’s Mexican roots because they came from a “polygamy commune” in Mexico.

Schweitzer made the remark in an interview with The Daily Beast, a news and opinion website, after being asked whether Montana might be a swing state during this year’s 2012 election.

According to The Daily Beast, Schweitzer said Montana likely would vote for Romney, but that Romney, a Mormon, might have trouble nationally because his father, George Romney, was “born on a polygamy commune in Mexico.”

Schweitzer, a Democrat, said later that he wasn’t misquoted, and that his comments had nothing to do with Romney’s faith or his church, which does not condone polygamy.

Schweitzer said he was describing the dilemma facing Romney, who is in trouble with Hispanic voters because “he took an ultra-right-wing position on immigration during the (Republican) primary.”

Mitt did not serve. George did not serve. Grandfathers did not serve. Great grandfathers did not serve.

Mitt's sons are not currently serving, but what's the point of this argument? Are its purveyors claiming a conspiracy?

Context matters. Could any of them have served? How rare is military service in general and other the time periods stated?

The problem with this line of reasoning is it is stupid and proves nothing special without any context. If 50-90%+ of Americans under similar circumstances had served in the military over this time period then you'd have a story. But, this meme alone and in isolation tells us nothing.

Without any context or comparison you don't get any conclusion and those purporting this sound like goofs.

Mitt Romney did not serve in any capacity in the US military, neither did his father, or grandfathers.
There does not have to be a war to serve in the military.
Romney’s family did not come to the US until the 1800s, the immigrated from Europe.

It appears to be really important to you that Romney’s family served in some capacity in the US military so If having a distant cousin or anyone with his name who served in the military is a way for you to say that the Romney’s served ok.

Good bye and good luck

Mitt Romney did not serve in any capacity in the US military, neither did his father, or grandfathers.

So now, you change your story again? So, it's now down to only Mitt, his father and two grandfathers, but only one of those two grandfathers was a Romney. So, three Romney men did not serve in our military, one who was only ten years old during WWI and the other was living in Mexico during the prime of his life. ;-)

You still didn't answer the question. In what capacity have you served our country's military?

It appears to be really important to you that Romney’s family served in some capacity in the US military so...

No, it is not important to me at all, but when idiots choose to mislead and lie to people, I will call them out. It was stated earlier in this thread no Romney had ever served, and also stated that Mormons do not serve in our military, yet I showed at least 16 Romney's in this line that have!

...If having a distant cousin or anyone with his name who served in the military is a way for you to say that the Romney’s served ok.

NONE of them are DISTANT cousins!

also stated that Mormons do not serve in our military

I never said that.

I said: Romney did not serve, his father did not serve and his grandfathers and great grandfathers did not serve. Those are the facts, like it or not.

If you want to keep bringing up relatives beyond that, be my guest.

Bottom line for me is that Romney is a liberal, and I don't vote for liberals.

Good bye

I never said that.

I didn't say you did, did I? Why do you continually try to change what I write? It just makes you look stupid.

...and great grandfathers did not serve. Those are the facts, like it or not.

but his great grandfather Charles Edward Robison did serve! That is a fact, whether you like it or not!

Still waiting for your answer...

In what branch of our country's military did you serve?

Brown Deer,

Excellent post!

For the record, I am not a "Romneybot." In fact, I would have preferred either Rick Santorum or Newt Gingrich as president (although I believe either--and especially the latter--would have found it much more difficult to win the general election).

I just fear for our country if Barack Obama is given another four years in office; especially considering that it would be an unfettered Barack Obama, free of any constraint due to considerations of his re-electability in 2016 (since he would be ineligible for a third term).

So I don’t misrepresent what you have said, be so kind as to clarity which Charles Robinson you are speaking about.

Was it the CR (Charles Robinson) who served in the Colored Military Troops 6th Infantry, New York, 1861-64.

Or the CR who served in the Regular Army, 1862-64 and deserted in 1864.

Or the CR who served in the 14th Infantry, Tennessee, 1861-66.

Or the CR who served in the Regular Army, Tennessee as a private, 1863.

Or the CR who served in the Regular Army, Missouri, in 1865.

Or the CR who served in the 17th Infantry, Michigan,New York 1863

Or the CR who served in the 14th Heavy Artillery Division, New York, 1866-1868.

Did I serve in the military as an active member - no.
When I was of the age to join and it was not easy for women to enlist when there was not an active war going on.
I attempted to enlist after high school, rejected.
After I received my college degree I attempted to enlist again and was again rejected.
Most women who were accepted had a specific skill set that was need, being an industrial psych/poli sci major wasn’t what they needed.
I am sure today it would be different.
There is not a single man in my family as far back as can be traced that has not served in the military for this country (three of the four lines of my family can be traced to 1625-1650 (The New World), one line came here in the 1910 and began serving then.
I have had women in my family who during active wars where able to served for the duration in some capacity.

Romney is not about his service or non service is is about his liberalism and I will not vote for a liberal where he has an R or a D by their name.

I would vote for my Irish Setter befire Romney. He just doesn’t have what it takes to STOP liberal fascism dead, and instead will enable it. Not much different than what we have now in Obama.

No, has any man in Mitt’s direct male line ever served?

For instance my son, me, my dad, and centuries of the same in my line with I assume, a few breaks?

We all know that you served because of the fierce attitude and attacks that you made against me when you thought that I had not.

LOL, I remember now how you romneybots back in 2007 and 2008, thought that the more useless length to a post, the more likely it was to change reality.

Remember that the rest of the world is not cult material, that childish fantasy stuff doesn’t work outside of the cult.

I must be missing something here.

Why would a Democrat make a charge against Romney that he comes from a polygamist family, when Obama's father was a polygamist?

Doesn't he know that words like that will blow back on him and hurt the Obama campaign?

Thank you for your Romney research.

Amazing how people who claim to be "Christian" are so quick to spread outrageous falsehoods and slanderous lies about a man and his entire family just because they despise their(Romneys) faith.

And their self righteous makes a mockery of their Christian witness and drive away potential converts.

I'm not a Mormon nor do I agree with their doctrine, and I'm skeptical of Mitt Romney's convenient "Road to Damascus" conversion to conservatism, but the utter vitriol against him not because what he has done personally but of his faith, makes me ashamed to be called a conservative.

Luckily, they are a minority ranting to themselves in an echo chamber. Thanks again for exposing them for what they are...hypocrites...
