Don't use the pistol grip with buckshot ☺

I have the Mossberg 590a1 and like it. I’d really like a bernelli semi-auto though. :)

I highly recommend taking a look at the 590.

I keep the 500 in its pistol grip configuration for in-home defense. The long stock version is at hand for outside duties. Both are loaded in my old LEO ammo model...alternating 00-buckshot and deerslug, with a deer slug out first.
I’ve used these (and other) 500’s for many years, and find them reliable, functional, affordable. Nothing fancy. They just work.

The only advise I will give is to get a shotgun that looks like a hunting shotgun (wood stock) and use bird shot to load in the gun.

If you are ever charged for using the shotgun, you want the gun to be your "hunting gun that just was handy when you needed it." You use bird shot because at close distances it hits like Thor's hammer, but does not penetrate walls that well, e.g. the kids' room.

I also recommend a pump because they are very reliable and the sound they make when being loaded is the international sound of "you are in a heap of trouble boy."

I’ve had one for years, and it has been flawless. Love it.

For home defense, I am going with something shorter, plus it holds 14+1. The Kel-Tec KSG:

Good choice. Either that or the equivalent 870, it’s pretty much a coin toss from what I can tell.

I have tried a pistol grip on a Mossberg 500 12 ga. Even with #4 shot it tries to separate your thumb from the rest of your hand. Standard stock went back on...

If it has a plastic safety catch, have a gunsmith replace it with a metal one. That’s about the only weakness of the 500.

My latest is a mossberg 930 jm pro that I’m loving. 9+1 with a 24 inch barrel. I think with a new plug I can get 10 + 1.

I’m with mrmeyer, get the 590. And if you’re a boat guy like me, get the stainless.

Buy it. For home defense it’s superior to the 870 IMO.
