Union boss: Attempts to remove ineffective teachers an attack on 'human rights'

Lynn Warne is the president of the Nevada State Education Association, and she appeared on Anjeanette Damon's “To the Point” show over the weekend, where she made the following comment about AB 225 and some other minor education reform bills passed by the 2011 Legislature. (7:30 mark)

Warne: Provisions in those bills [including AB 225], much of which we supported, really struck at the heart of what we feel are educators' rights, workers' rights, human rights really, and there was no compromise to be had. (Emphasis added)

Striking at the heart of "human rights" is a serious charge, so let's consider what AB 225 did.

Now, while AB 225 certainly represented an improvement over the old system, where 95 percent of teachers received tenure after one year of teaching and became virtually impossible to fire afterwards, the new system only allows a bad teacher with tenure to be removed after three years of poor performance.

In other words, a poor teacher would be able to harm the education of 50 to 100 or more students before a school is able to remove him or her for subpar performance. The stakes here are exceptionally high for students, because students with poor teachers learn only half as much as they would with an average teacher and a third as much as they would with an excellent teacher.

So Warne, union boss of and representing NSEA, believes that removing a bad teacher from the classroom is a violation of "human rights."

Liberal teachers are not teachers and also not human.

To be human is to have a brain, and to have a brain is to use it, and to use it is NOT to believe in cr*p that never has and never will work .....evah!!!

While there is a time and a place to remove an “ineffective” teacher, the way these things are written makes it entirely possible to remove teachers for their religious and/or political beliefs.

Evaluations are normally done by one staff, and often by just one staff member, over a period of years.

The standards are not just hard data on student improvement, but they include esoteric things like style, rapport, adherence to protocol, etc.

In short, the school building will soon be filled with the cronies of the evaluator and staff.

Given the liberal bent of education, that means conservative ideas, events, and people will be filtered out.

A poor performing teacher in the classroom violates the human rights of the students in that classroom. If your performance is below standards in most any work place, you’re fired! The union shows its true colors, and they cast a sham upon the entire education system!

We need to remember that unions are not responsible for the education of our children, accountable to the taxpaying public or parents. Unions are only responsible to teachers and their promotion and self preservation. Where does it say that failing to be an effective teacher, as judged by the results of most public education, violates any human right? The claim is straight from the Progressive, Saul Alinsky model of “critical theory” where the ends justifies the means. Use the “LANGUAGE OF THE PEOPLE”, lie, cheat and attack anyone who oppose you, whatever it takes to prevail. This is jungle warfare folks, without the mosquitoes.

What other job do you know of that you can’t be fired for not doing your job? Teachers should be held to a higher standard since they are the ones educating your children. That is why children graduating from high school can’t read or write on a 6th grade level.
