Boehner Offers Student Loan Deal By Jessica Yellin and Deirdre Walsh April 25, 2012
(CNN) -- The House will vote Friday to extend current rates on federally funded college loans for one year, Speaker John Boehner announced on Wednesday in what is seen as an attempt to blunt President Barack Obama's momentum on an issue popular with young voters . Boehner said the extension will be paid for with funds from the Affordable Care Act, the Obama administration's signature health-care law.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Maryland, accused House Republicans of paying "lip service" to the issue, and argued the way they pay for keeping the rates low would hurt middle-class Americans.
"They are yet again asking working families to pay the price instead of closing tax loopholes that benefit special interests," Van Hollen said in a written statement. House Democrats introduced their own measure, which would cancel tax subsidies for big oil companies as a way to pay for freezing student loan rates at current levels.
And Rep. George Miller, the ranking Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, said Boehner's plan amounted to "robbing Peter to pay Peter."
"The Republican bill strips away vital funding for breast and cervical cancer screenings for women," the California congressman said in a written statement on the plan. "It strips funding for increasing child immunization and for screening newborns for things like hearing loss. In other words, the Republican bill will directly hurt women and children."
It's unclear whether Senate Democrats or the White House will accept the Republican plan.
This week the president has been hammering congressional Republicans in front of college audiences in three swing states, Iowa, Colorado and North Carolina. He has said Republicans are threatening to let the rate on student loans double.

Screw em.
Boner!
As I’ve said, Phony-Care IS the Federal Labor Camp.
No limit.
What happened to cutting spending? What I’m hearing is that Boner wants to take money we don’t have away from Obama and spend it to keep the marxist training camps in business.
Don’t worry, the Tea Party guys are going to stop all that spending and put hussein in his place. But not now, maybe next election, or the one after that. Yeah, that’s it.
................LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
Ya know, I keep up with politics, it’s a weakness of mine. All through the GOD primary season, I can’t remember much talk about cutting anything, except from Ron Paul.
What in the hell is wrong with the GOP???? If they can’t say anything other than “cut taxes” they aren’t going to win anything.
I know with Romney as the nominee I probably won’t be hearing anything about specific cuts, but until the GOP has specifics, they won’t be getting my vote.
I’ll vote Constitution party.
Oh, and if that means 4 more years of obama, so be it, I will not settle....anymore.
Make the Bolshies vote against it, and, let them defend their vote.
That means boner and company KNOW obamacare is law and will stay that way.
Not bad! They key part is to play it up big after Dems reject it.
Harvard’s endowment is about $30 billion (that’s billion with a “b”); Yale’s is about $20 billion; the rest of the Ivies are mostly between 5 and 10 billion. Lesser institutions are less well-endowed, but lots of others have endowments in the billions, or at least hundreds of millions.
Virtually every penny they earn on their endowments is tax free.
Tax the earnings on their damn endowment to cover the below-market interest rate losses on student loans - they’re the ones responsible for ridiculous tuitions, not me.
If the GOP learns how not to lose a won game, that will be an improvement.
I am not confident that they do but I am amazed that it took so long for them to see what the game they are playing really is about.
Politics and government is a zero-sum game: someone loses and someone gains. There is no Santa who eats the bill himself for the Federal spending that nearly everyone demands some of.
Want to win?? Then explain that doing what Dems want is bad for most voters, even worse for them than what you(Republicans) want to do. Sad that it is that simple.
Why yes, yes he does, ask Michelle why she couldnt get it defunded.
Actually, it means that if the SC strikes down the law in June the funding vanishes and then Obama will have to explain it to the kids.
I see this as a very interesting strategy on Boehner's part. LOL!
