Under pressure from farming advocates in rural communities, and following a report by The Daily Caller, the Obama administration withdrew a proposed rule Thursday that would have applied child labor laws to family farms.
Critics complained that the regulation would have drastically changed the extent to which children could work on farms owned by family members. The U.S. Department of Labor cited public outcry as the reason for withdrawing the rule.
The decision to withdraw this rule including provisions to define the parental exemption was made in response to thousands of comments expressing concerns about the effect of the proposed rules on small family-owned farms, the Department said in a press release Thursday evening. To be clear, this regulation will not be pursued for the duration of the Obama administration.
The rule would have dramatically changed what types of chores children under the age of 16 could perform on and around American farms. It would have prohibited them from working with tobacco, operating almost all types of power-driven equipment and being employed to work with raw farm materials.

Color me skeptical.
Are they suspending the rule, or only refusing to enforce it on “family” farms?
The reason I am skeptical is because a good many “family” farms are indeed incorporated, even though they are really and truly family farms.
I bet the fedgov enforces this crap on the incorporated family farms.
Families have been running farms in this country for over 200 years. There is no reason (that is not nefarious) for the Feds to pass any such laws this late in the game.
Obama will have more flexibility in a 2nd term. He won’t need laws. His pet agencies will just make any rules they(he) wants.
What is the Constitutional basis for such a rule? without a doubt it will be said to fall under the poor, tortured Commerce Clause. It is time for a clarifying amendment to return our Country to sanity and power back to the States.
I am surprised and don’t believe this is a permanent plan for them!’
"To be clear" seems to be the BHO administration's favorite phrase. I am skeptical of everything they do. They withdrew it because of public opinion, or it was all orchestrated from the beginning to make it look like they are willing to be kind of enough to "give" us some of our rights and freedoms back--as if they ever had the power to take them away to begin with?
Deferred until next year.
This ridiculous incursion into American farm life was born out of 0bama and his socialist followers believing (deeply) that they know best what is good for all of us. This was about control, like 99% of the other crap he and his minions have foist on the American people.
The simple truth is that this country would be in much better shape if the values that drive American family farms were incorporated across the social fabric of America.
Hard work doesn’t deprive young people of their youth. It builds their character to face adulthood better prepared to rely on themselves and take responsibility for their own successes and their own failures.
The work ethic of the American family farm is one that clearly demonstrates that achievement comes with effort, and that difficulties can be overcome without having to rely on the handouts of government.
0bama needs to be thrown out on his ear, along with the socialists he brought along for this trampling of the US Constitution and the American way of life.

Agricultural endeavor is as ancient here as anywhere.
This Solis gal is a known Commie. Apparently she's among the stupid commies because even the Chicoms have given up on the commune model.
The nannies have no backbone, except when they smell the taste of the raw power they crave. But never fear, this outrageous proposal will be back, maybe in different clothes, but the craven socialists will never stop trying.
"While the Agricultural Hazardous Occupations Order was written in an effort to protect children from dangerous situations, it could prevent many young people from working on family farms or participating in agriculture-related educational programs.
Under the proposed changes, the "parental exemption" itself would not apply to incorporated family farms, Field noted.
"Many small, family farms are incorporated because of the tax advantages," he said. "But when a farm is incorporated, parents are considered a corporate entity and they would not be covered by the parental exemption."
Field said that due to negative feedback from producer groups, the U.S. Department of Labor has appeared to back off of this provision as it relates to incorporated farms. However, he said there has yet to be a published revision."
Farm land is currently an investment opportunity. A government rule that >increases farming costs may put more family farms on the market.
A lot of things done under the guise of ‘the government is here to help you’ are really just opportunities for politicians&cronies to make money.

King: Obama Administration Finally Caves on Youth Farm Labor
Thursday, April 26, 2012
Washington, DC- Congressman Steve King (R-IA) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that it will withdraw its proposed rule to prohibit young people from working on family farms and participating in agriculture education programs including Future Farmers of America and 4-H.
“Once again President Obama’s overreaching policies have outraged the American people,” said King. “I’m happy to see the backlash surrounding this rule has prompted the Department of Labor to withdraw the proposed rule. The Department of Agriculture collaborated with the Department of Labor on this direct assault of American family farms. Family farms are the core of American culture, and for centuries they have played a large role in instilling a strong work ethic in young people. I know because I raised my three sons in rural Iowa and taught them the value of hard work.”
“I’m pleased to have had the support of many farm families as I’ve worked to oppose this rule in order to ensure that young people will still have the same opportunities. This policy was not only unnecessary, it threatened the very way of life that I and so many others hold dear. When will President Obama realize that his out of touch policies do not reflect the values of the American people? His actions continue to show that he is disconnected with the people in the heartland of this great country.”
Comment from Hilda Solis, Secretary of Labor last summer:
The Obama "administration" ends Jan of 2013 regardless of whether he wins or loses. We are the only ones who can ensure that it's not replaced with the Obama "era of flexibility"
