No one who was there or watched it on TV will ever forget the rioting in Los Angeles that began 20 years ago this Sunday. The mostly-black community of South L.A. erupted after a jury acquitted four white police officers in the videotaped beating of Rodney King, a black motorist stopped for speeding.
Six days of violence killed 55 people, injured thousands, and shocked the nation. CBS News correspondent John Blackstone covered the riots in 1992 and returned to the neighborhood this week.
When Los Angeles was seized by chaos and violence 20 years ago, the city's deep divisions were brutally exposed.

More than 1,500 businesses were looted or destroyed. Many of the ransacked stores were owned by African Americans.
But for Tolliver's barbershop, there was some protection: A sign on the door that said "Black Owned".

There is always next time.
Cccan’t we all jjjust get along?
It’s not so much that the neighborhood hasn’t recovered, it’s that the culture that has been continuing it’s accelerating decline that is the real problem. Not so much a problem, really. “Problem” implies that there is a solution to solve the issue. We live in interesting times, but it’s still sad. It’s good to be old. (I add that only because I’m a “glass half full” kinds guy. :{) )
Those neighborhoods would have healed much faster if they had been simply blown to bits back then. They were already in ruins.
The riots had nothing to do with Rodney King.
They were simply a pogrom against Koreans.
L.A. Riots aka “Night of the ferals scammed into wilding by the MSM which has yet to be held accountable for it”.
I guess we’ll be seeing that 20 years or “healing” go in the toilet this summer.
Or in November when The One loses.
Gee, I wonder what the purpose of this article might be?
It’s easy for me to say, because I don’t live anywhere near where these animals might strike... but as far as I am concerned, they can bring it any ol’ time they get the itch.
At some point these asshats need to be dealt with, by whatever means necessary.
Their group pity party needs to end and they need to learn how to act like Americans and find some self respect.
Sounds like a threat
Tied that. It didn't work. So now, I am cocked & locked. My family, my home, my property are off limits to any of “Holder's People”. Any of his people violating these simple rules will be JUDGEed harshly.
I think healing is the wrong word.
Festering would be better.
Tied that = Tried that.
“If you don’t elect Obama
Then the black man will get you!
The black man will get you!
The black man will get you!
If you don’t elect Obama
Then the black man will get you!
And Korean groceries will go up in smoke!”
Thank you CBS. Please do let us know when the sky is falling, too.
“Rodney King, a black motorist stopped for speeding.”
No bias there. CBS is disgusting. Should have read:
“Rodney King, a black felon high on PCP tried to evade police during a high speed chase and then violently resisted arrest despite being Tased several times and had to be subdued with batons”
Yes. I firmly believe that the last twenty years have been a period of decline and deterioration. This will be a long hot summer for virtually no reason at all.
I lived through the riots, and saw first hand how fast that thin veneer of civilization disappears. A friend and myself actually were shot at a few days after the riots subsided, and called the police who showed up surprisingly fast in about 20 cars!
10 mins later we heard around 20-30 shots occurring just a few blocks over, where there were some less than desirables living (this was in North Hollywood).
Never saw those un-desirables around our neighborhood again...
