Paul Ryan Suddenly Decides That He Hates Ayn Rand
New York Magazine ^ | 4/27/2012 | Dan Amira

Yesterday, Ryan claimed that Ayn Rand's philosophy "reduces human interactions down to mere contracts and it is antithetical to my worldview." But in 2005, Ryan said, "The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand," and in 2003, he claimed that he gave out copies of Atlas Shrugged as Christmas presents. And those two examples are really only the tip of the Rand-love iceberg. Is this how you impress Mitt Romney? By proving that you can flip-flop as egregiously as

“Every era has a currency that buys souls. In some the currency is pride, in others it is hope, in still others it is a holy cause. There are of course times when hard cash will buy souls, and the remarkable thing is that such times are marked by civility, tolerance, and the smooth working of everyday life.” Eric Hoffer

You couldn’t be more wrong, Free Trade is the only thing that has kept us going since we backed or currency with gold, Thank You Nixon for destroying the currency and making the connected and the billionaire oligarchs who have a direct line to the treasury and the Fed our masters. If we would have let them fail in the fall of 2008 this fiscal nightmare would be over and billionaires would be millionaires and the old guard would have been properly replaced by the new entrepreneur, the young guns creating something the people want.

What an evil man, only a communist could say such a thing. The truth is buying souls is something only devils do. Not everyone has a price Mr Holder, something I suspect will be born out over the next generation as our children give their lives and blood and sacred honor to rescue this nation and it’s Ideals from people like you!

Rand was born in Russia in 1905, and left for America in 1926. She witnessed the whole Bolshevik catastrophe first hand, including the persecution of her parents. But hey, what did she know about collectivism compared to a worldly wise einstein like you, who has read all about it. Naive indeed.

Such are used to make the big picture understandable. I think Rand was among the first to give concrete voice as to where we were headed, and in that regard she was right, for we are almost there now.

She remained a radically extreme atheist until shortly after her death.

Rand is exciting when first read, but she is not the ultimate philosopher. It is OK to outgrow her.

Have you ever read anything besides her novels? It's in her essays and Epistemology that she lays out, explains, and justifies her philosophy.

(of which I once was)

“Free trade” is a large part, of America’s decline.

You couldn't have been a Rand adherent for very long with your oft-stated disdain for freedom.

Two things time has taught me, pros can’t play call your own fouls games, and the values you get out of something are the values you take into it.

I can identify with Ryan. I enjoyed Rand and her views appealed to me when I was younger. Over the years, less and less. She’s good on capitalism and free markets, but loses it completely for me at any level above that; her metaphysics are extremely week.

I clearly miss read this quote, I’m still not sure I fully understand it, my apologies to Mr. Hoffer and I will see if I can acquire some of his writings and educate myself, I simply had not ever heard of him and mistook him for the communist Erik Holder to whom I would and could never apologise.

We never did get part two of that movie, did we....

Considering that Part 1 only came out a year ago, how soon do you expect Part 2 to be produced, filmed and released?

But to answer your question, the tentative release date is fall of this year.......

Randy’s spot on about socialism, but you can tell she was probably a B in real life. Very hostile to religion.

My question for the Ayn Rand types is why the hell should I (as a taxpayer in the Ayn Rand world model) pay taxes to enforce some dumbass contract between two people who I have nothing to do with?

Rand’s seems to have had more influence on bad literature in this country than on government economic policies.
