Because we’ve had the audacity to appear in public with our family, we’ve been getting hate mail from liberals who are deeply offended that a white family would raise a black child (the Huffington Post posted a video of Naomi and me at CPAC and it generated more than 1,000 comments, many of them utterly vile). Usually, I laugh at baseless criticism and it inspires me to work even harder at artfully annoying my critics. But when I get accused of actually harming my daughter by daring to raise her, it infuriates me. See, for example, an excerpt from tonight’s Facebook message:
“I feel so sorry for your little girl! She has a hard complex life ahead of her! She should not be raised by people who vote against her best interests.”
(It was longer and much more offensive.)

My cousin and her husband (white) adopted a dark-skinned boy in Madagascar when they were there working for a missionary organization. I think maybe they knew his mother and she was terminally ill or something. They weren’t looking for a child to adopt, but he needed them and they rose to the occasion. He is a young adult now, and I met him at the last family reunion. He is mentally slow, but was in a suitable vocational program and was flourishing. He belongs in our family as much as anyone else. Love and loyalty matter more than consistent skin tone.
Ironic that Madonna and Brangelina adopt African children and are heroes, but when Republican parents who are not celebrities try the same thing, they are ridiculed.

Ethiopia is known to have orphans in poverty and that is a country where many adoption assistance groups are very active in. Ukraine is another country currently 'popular' for foreign adoptions.
The skepticism you are expressing is really quite absurd. You can't just accept that people are out there who have it in their heart to provide homeless kids with a loving home?
Everyone responded directly to the 'questions' - which weren't appropriate to ask to begin with. No one seems uncomfortable with their answers at all - you just don't want to accept the truth and have to assign vile alterior motives to something as simple as people with the means to do so providing a loving home to a child who was homeless and had no family to love her.
Put frankly, people go to Africa (or Haiti, Cambodia, wherever) to adopt kids for a couple of reasons. They either want them as fashion accessories, like rich girls carrying around expensive little dogs in their purses... or they want to be able to hold them up as merit badges that advance their status in our politically correct culture. Just like white people perceive power in claiming a smidge of ethnic ancestry, they also get brownie points for standing up and saying in a solemn voice that they adopted a kid from Timbuktu and have supposedly suffered the slings and arrows of their intolerant cohorts for their good deed.
I've seen many ridiculous things written before, but that would have to rank in the top 1%.
My guess they wanted to adopt. They may as Christians, have some interest in Ethiopia. Who cares? What is very nice is that a TWO YEAR old child who WEIGHED ONLY 14 LBS. was blessed to find a wonderful loving family and in return that child blessed the family. Just to get some perspective, some (not many) children here in the States weigh that at birth!
Now young man, go out into the world and get some humanity along with some humility.
