Blind Chinese dissident speaks exclusively to Channel 4 News (Chen sold out by US Government)

Exclusive: Chen Guangcheng tells Channel 4 News he left the US embassy for hospital as part of an "agreement" with the Chinese government, but despite promises, no-one from the US embassy is with him.

Chen had been under protection at the US embassy in Beijing after escaping from house arrest last Friday.

He left the embassy for hospital on Wednesday morning, although he told Channel 4 News this was part of an agreement with the Chinese government rather than because of a medical emergency.

"Nobody from the (US) Embassy is here. I don't understand why. They promised to be here," he added.

When asked if he was at hospital because of his health, Chen replied: "No. I came because of an agreement. I was worried about the safety of my family. A gang of them have taken over our house, sitting in our room and eating at our table, waving thick sticks around.

"They've turned our home into a prison, with seven cameras and electric fence all around."

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton who arrived in Beijing on Wednesday, promised to "remain engaged" with his case.

Mrs Clinton called on the Chinese government to keep its pledge to leave Mr Chen unmolested. "The United States government and the American people are committed to remaining engaged with Mr Chen and his family in the days, weeks and years ahead," she said in a statement.

"He sounded firm in the beginning when I ask him what he wanted to tell the world," writes Channel 4 News producer Bessie Du.

"I asked him if he told the embassy that he wanted to leave China, he said: 'no, because I didn't have enough information (to make a decision)'. Later he got more anxious and started crying: 'I'm very sad..(long pause)..'

"I asked: 'what are you sad about?' and he said: 'everything I've been through in the last few days'.

"I think he really doesn't know what to do now, especially after he heard about the threat his wife and children have received. His friends also tell him that he cannot rely on the "assurance" from the Chinese authority.. This confuses him even more."

'My wish is to leave the country'

Speaking on Wednesday afternoon, Chen told Channel 4 News that he wanted to leave China with his family for a while, despite previous reports that suggested he wanted to stay in China. "My biggest wish is to leave the country with my family and rest for a while. I haven't had a Sunday [rest-day] in seven years," he said.

Lawyer Teng Biao, who is a close friend of Mr Chen, tweeted an account of several phone conversations with his friend describing his uncertainty about whether to stay in China or not. He said in a tweet: "no matter if it was because of threats or other reasons that he left the embassy, he's obviously not feeling safe now."

The dissident Zeng Jinyan, who saw Mr Chen and family in hospital, tweeted that: "Weijing [Chen's wife] told me this afternoon that it was her that convinced Guangcheng to leave the embassy to meet her and the children. Otherwise they would not have met because she and the children would have been sent back to Shangdong. In our phone conversation this evening, Chen told me for the first time that he wanted to leave China with his family."

Mr Chen had been under house arrest and restricted to his home village of Linyi in eastern Shandong province since September 2010, after spending five years in jail. Although he is not charged with any crime officially, Chen exposed the practice of forcing abortions on women who became pregnant and transgressed the one child policy.

He reported his escape on Friday by posting a video online in which he also asked Premier Wen Jiabao to investigate maltreatment against him and his family.

US officials said that embassy staff had helped Mr Chen when he arrived at the US mission in Beijing.

China's media silence on the incident ended on Wednesday with a brief report by the Xinhua news agency, saying that Mr Chen had left the embassy 'of his own volition'.

A senior US official confirmed that Chen was out of the embassy on Wednesday: "Chen Guangcheng has arrived at a medical facility in Beijing where he will receive medical treatment and be reunited with his family," said the official who requested anonymity.

Diplomatic embarrassment

Mr Chen's escape from house arrest happened just days before China and the United States were due to hold high-level talks in Beijing. Mrs Clinton said that the USA had handled the case "in a way that reflected his choices and our values." But China's Foreign Ministry said it was extremely unhappy the embassy had taken Chen in.

"It must be pointed out that the United States Embassy took the Chinese citizen Chen Guangcheng into the embassy in an irregular manner, and China expresses its strong dissatisfaction over this," ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said in a statement carried by Xinhua.

"The US method was interference in Chinese domestic affairs, and this is totally unacceptable to China. China demands that the United States apologise over this, thoroughly investigate this incident, punish those who are responsible, and give assurances that such incidents will not recur."

Well, he left of his own free volition, even if the promise of an escort of embassy people was broken. The preezy and lapdog media will focus on that, saying Marines weren’t ordered to drag him out. If they don’t accuse him of lying, that is.

The US is no longer a beacon of liberty

America is only a beacon for deadbeats, terrorists, never-wazzes, illegals, dimocrats, homos, and Obama. All good for nothing. All dregs of society. All costing tax payers millions while producing nothing but more illegal crack babies.

Ah, The Cowardly Obama at it again.

He's so busy celebrating his so very tough call on “getting Osama” he has no time for anything else.

Oh, BTW Obama thank you so much for adding those TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF DEBT. It puts China in a very nice and comfy strategic position.

FUBO.

The US owes China too much money and they can do what they wish with us - thanks be to Obama

Not really. This is about statism and how people like Obama view government power. As far as Obama is concerned this man belongs to the commies and they own him. Obama was just returning their property.

Also note how our government spews propaganda with the statement "he is being reunited with his family". This is Elian Gonzales all over again.

I agree that money talks. Maybe Romney can call Huntsman (the former American ambassador to China) and spend a few million to work out a deal that embarrasses Obama. Romney seems to be good at using his money to buy votes.

That, of course, assumes that China isn't perfectly happy with seeing Obama in office.

But who knows? I trust the Chinese to be concerned about their own self-interest, and they know from firsthand experience that socialism doesn't work. Maybe they'll actually be willing to listen to an argument from Romney that this is a good chance to embarrass Obama so they don't lose their investment in the American economy.

The sad thing is that even as I'm posting this, I'm realizing that I don't want to help Romney win. The goal needs to stay focused on what's good for Chen, who seems to be a sincere dissident opposing China's one-child policy. Sometimes the enemy of your enemy (i.e., Romney) is useful, even if he's not your friend.

Does this remind anyone else of Elias Gonzales? Always trust the left to side with the totalitarian thugs over the individual’s freedom. Common link: Hilary.

when you owe the bank a million you have a problem, when you owe the bank a billion, the bank has a problem.

Yeah, right. This silly notion that the US, the world's biggest debtor nation, has the advantage over China because we owe them so much money is pure nonsense. It is far better to be the banker than the debtor.

The US is almost $16 trillion in debt. Our debt servicing costs are now abour $300 billion annually. Once interest rates increase to more normal levels, we will be incurring almost trillion dollar a year interest payments. In fact, our interest payments to the PRC will be enough to fund their military.

In the meantime, China will be using our debt to influence our behavior in much the same way we used to do when we were the world's largest creditor. The Fed already buys 61% of our issuance of treasuries to fund the 42 cents of every federal dollar spent. We are the ones with the problem, not the Chinese.

We owe the Chinese $1 trillion. When your banker speaks, you listen.

Ya know what, maybe this is because I was bullied as a kid in the 1970's and then was told to stand up for myself. If I was President, I'd fight for this guy, no matter how much we owe to Red China. I wouldn't care because it is the right thing to do. There will be a time to tell them to FOAD, for whatever reason. I'd say, "sorry, we're flat broke, declaring bankruptcy" and then reorganizing. I'd let them know our military is on high alert if they try something stupid, if they don't that's good, but I'd be ready if I had to stand up to them. I'd have the Minutemen II's and III's ready to go as with our SLBM's and B-52's but I'd say, "if you don't try anything, we won't." Come to think of it, I would not want to be President, I'd probably flip them The Bird, say something obscene and start WWIII but we can't kow-tow to them either. I just think back to me being bullied and shoved around as well as when you see animals backed into a corner with nothing to lose, they fight the hardest. Even a rabbit or a day old baby chick, when cornered will fight and despite them looking cute, they can be nasty. Still if I had to call the shots, I'd fight for what is right, money be damned.

Come to think of it, sometimes I wish I was President, I stand up to them, I would not care. Tell you the truth, deep inside, I'd be scared, but when you think about when people need to do the right thing, sure they were scared but it needs to be done. I'm sure down from our Founding Fathers to the men at Normandy, they were scared too but they did the job and fought for what is right.

I was watching "Gunsmoke" today (I was off today) and I turned to my mother, "we need more Marshall Dillions and less Obamas" and she agreed. We need a Marshall Dillion in the White House and to stand up to the Chi-Comms and others who would hurt us.

I'm a typical amateur radio nerd that got bullied as a kid. I'm very nearsighted and a little bit on the short side but now I refused to be bullied anymore, we need to adopt that as a country.

As a country, we need more "Gunsmoke" and less "Jerry Springer."

I agree we should stand up for our principles, but we also have to deal with reality. The best thing we can do is stop these huge deficits and get our fiscal house in order. Our interest payments will fund the Chinese military.

Agreed. However, I would refuse to be bullied plus the fact that we would be funding their army as well. It would be like me buying The Son of Sam (David Berkowitz) an AR-15 or an AK-47. Overall, I don't know how on God's Green Earth we will ever pay it off although I believe we should just say "sorry" and punch out and then reorganize with the intention of getting our house in fiscal order as well as return to a more Constitutional based system.
