Maryland Court Rules Pit Bull Dogs Are "Inherently Dangerous"

A new ruling makes it easier for anyone attacked by a pit bull or pit bull mix in Maryland to take legal action against the dog's owner. The Maryland Court of Appeals ruling declares pit bulls as a breed are "inherently dangerous," and the owner of a pit bull or a cross-bred pit that attacks is strictly liable for damages, as is any landlord who rents to a pit bull owner.

The Maryland SPCA, which arranges adoptions for dogs that need homes, currently has three pit bulls under its care: a five-month-old Brutus is scheduled to be adopted this week, Ayoki is available and Valentina will be put up for adoption soon. But the SPCA is concerned that it may be harder to find adoptive homes and families may abandon pit bulls after the recent ruling.

"We believe that an animal's behavior should be the determining factor in whether or not the animal is considered dangerous," said Cheryl Bernard Smith, of SPCA. "We don't believe that a particular breed should be pinpointed for that." "All dogs, if you don't train them and show them love, can turn out to be mean animals," said Rodney Taylor, of Prince George's County Animal Management. "It has a lot to do with the owner and how you raise the pet."

The Maryland Court of Appeals decision dealt with the case of a young boy who suffered life-threatening injuries when he was attacked by a pit bull.

I’m sorry. I don’t understand your point.

“I love the breed, and some day, I hope to own one. They are only vicious if they are trained to be so, as is with any breed.”

I used to believe that as well and have said so on this very forum ... chastised for my ignorance as well...

My sweet “DOG” that was his name would lick you to death, never barked or was he ever aggressive ... then one day he just went nuts and if I hadn’t grabbed his collar my neighbor would probably own my house now... and the neighbor was not a stranger and owns 2 Pits himself... we just said to each other ... he must smell your dog on you, except that I know his dogs and mine played together all the time.

Someone stole that dog from me... that is my story and I’m sticking to it.

TT

I’d rather be with pit bulls than faggots any day.

You’d love MD’s castle doctrine.

If somebody outside my fence ‘scares me’ I can pick ‘em off.

*Note to dog killers: I spook ~real~ easy.

Nope.

Thousands of Staffs go into the AKC show rings every year with wagging tails and never so much as growl.

AmStaffs and Staffordshire Terriers are the original ‘pit bull’ stock.

They’ve been doing so for a hundred years.

I have, however, never seen a handler who was wearing a backwards hat, droopy ass pants or a hoodie.

Probably just coincidence, that.

[the original purpose of those breeds was to assist cattle drovers, hence the “bull and terrier” old name. the dog was created to grab and tenaciously hold the nose of dangerous bulls to protect the drover]

#1: My pitbull wouldn’t attack you because he is not some vicious man eating attack dog.
#2: I, however am very capable of protecting myself and my dog.
And I don’t use children’s toys to do it, either.

I don’t think dogs go off for no reason.
It may not be readily apparent but there is always a reason.
It would only be conjecture based on the info given.

Your dog was sensing something you weren’t...

Was there alcohol involved?
Is your neighbor a jerk, overbearing, loud, aggressive?
Could DOG have thought you were being threatened?
What was the neighbor doing at the time your dog became aggressive?

What did DOG do, start barking? hackles up?
You say you grabbed his collar, it appears that he hadn’t at that point made a charge at the neighbor?
Was DOG trying to get at the neighbor once you had hold of his collar?

Did DOG have contact with the neighbor at a later time?
If so, what was his reaction?

*sigh*

Pitbull threads always go south quick. For the record, I’ve never owned one, but I’ve been attacked by two. I have scars on my arms to prove it.

That being said, I have a border collie whose ear was nocked pretty good by a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I also own a dachshund who’s more apt to bite than any dog I’ve owned. Small dogs, while not maiming, can leave a mark.

Pitbulls are a special breed that require a highly mature owner who is 100% committed to caring for and training that animal. They are the definition of feral. Sadly, an overwhelming majority of pit owners are in way over their heads. They are absolutely a bully breed, but like rotties and dobies, they can be tame and very loving with the right owner.

I believe that’s accurate. Chihuahuas are vicious but their size makes them “cute.”

Maybe I should clarify my comment. The fact that the military would ban pit bulls but promote, even welcome, rampant homosexuality is screwed up as far as I’m concerned. That was the point of my comment.

I would never own a Chihuahua. Too mean. Unpredictable. My pittie Rufus is neither.
