Doctors call on President Obama to stop eating junk food in public By Elise Viebeck - 05/09/12 08:11 AM ET

A physicians' healthcare advocacy group is preparing to file a petition calling on President Obama to stop eating hamburgers, hot dogs and other unhealthy foods before cameras.

"As role model to millions of Americans, the president has a responsibility to watch what he eats in public," said Susan Levin, nutrition education director with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM).

Obama's occasional stops at Washington, D.C.-area burger joints always receive press attention.

He famously treated staff to lunch at Good Stuff Eatery on Capitol Hill in August 2011. A year before that, he and then-Russian president Dmitry Medvedev grabbed food at Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, Va.

And in March, during a visit to Ohio with British Prime Minister David Cameron, he ate hot dogs while watching college basketball.

Levin said in a statement that processed meats like hot dogs "kill more Americans every year than tobacco does, and they cost taxpayers billions of dollars in healthcare."

She cited increasing rates of obesity in the United States. A study out this week projects that 42 percent of Americans will be obese by 2030.

"The White House would never set up a photo op showing the president buying cigarettes, so why is it okay to show him eating a hot dog?" she added.

Obama, an ex-smoker, kicked the habit in 2010, the first lady has said.

Despite Obama's taste for unhealthy foods, some media outlets have reported that the president appears to have lost weight since beginning his term.

PCRM's petition asks the White House to issue an executive order barring the president, the first family, the vice president and all members of the Obama cabinet from eating foods in public "that can cause cancer and obesity."

A release noted that eating processed meats was shown in a recent study to increase the risk of premature death.

The group will file the petition on Thursday.

To hide the "Do as I say, not as I do" mentality. They don't even realize the hypocrisy in this statement.

I have never understood why people call hamburgers junk food.

A hamburger is nearly a complete meal.

Meat
Bread.
Salad

Add some fries and a strawberry shake.. and you also get

Dairy
Fruit
Starch

I just dont get it. If I seperated the items and laid them out on a plate.. it would look just like a picture of a perfect meal.

So we will get to see zillions of photos of them eating broccoli and spinach (or some exotic vegetation that only the elite can afford)?

“Levin said in a statement that processed meats like hot dogs “kill more Americans every year than tobacco does, and they cost taxpayers billions of dollars in healthcare.”

So then....IF Americans were responsible for the costs of their own healthcare as it was *BTK then perhaps the argument about the costs to taxpayers would be what?

*BTK: Before Ted Kennedy

You could do the same thing with a fruit cake. It's all about sugar, calories and fat.

I couldn't care less if Obama eats sugar covered, lard laden balls of pig $hit wrapped in a chocolate candy shell in front of starving Pigmies in New Guiney. I want him to stop being president.

First they came for the smokers, and I did not speak up - because I am not a smoker. Then they came for the hotdogs......

.....and gassing away more than he already does as vegetarian diets I understand cause exhorbitant amounts of gassing. At least an article I read about Hitler stated as much as he was a vegetarian. There are quite a few similarities.

Hamburgers used to have a reputation of having garbage meat mixed in. Back in the 30s White Castle was trying to dispel the image with immaculate restaurants, uniforms, etc. They did a stunt where a guy ate nothing but White Castle burgers for one month then had a doctor examine him on film and declare him completely healthy.

I completely agree! Hamburgers are good food! A greasy hamburger taste best but isn’t the best for you but other than that I don’t feel guilty when I eat one.

Do as Michelle says; not as I do.

Maybe, Michelle needs to put a food guard in the WH kitchen to make sure none of the evil food ever gets out in there.

Isn’t there a former teacher/lunch monitor available. I seem to recall one ‘resigning’ in one of the Carolinas recently.

Imagine a picture of a dinner plate with a steak, a potatoe, a dinner roll, some strawberrys, and a salad with a glass of milk sitting behind it.

Sounds to me like the very picture of a perfect meal.

Now grind up the meat... cut up the potatoe into strips... drop the strawberries into the milk... cut the dinner roll in half and put the meat, a salad in the middle of it...

and suddenly it’s supposedly junk food that will kill you!

ROFL
