Michele Bachmann no longer wants to be a Swiss miss.
The Minnesota congresswoman asked the Swiss government Thursday to withdraw her citizenship, saying she wanted to make it clear that she was a proud U.S. citizen.
Today I sent a letter to the Swiss Consulate requesting withdrawal of my dual Swiss citizenship, which was conferred upon me by operation of Swiss law when I married my husband in 1978, said Bachmann in a statement.
I took this action because I want to make it perfectly clear: I was born in America and I am a proud American citizen. I am, and always have been, 100 percent committed to our United States Constitution and the United States of America. As the daughter of an Air Force veteran, stepdaughter of an Army veteran and sister of a Navy veteran, I am proud of my allegiance to the greatest nation the world has ever known, she added.
POLITICO, along with Swiss TV, reported Tuesday she was granted Swiss citizenship on March 19.

How did the birthers miss this one?
(/just kidding you know I love you all)
Michele: you know I love you, but you’re flakier than an over-baked croissant.
Not a bad question, responds a Birther.
I’ve never heard of it before.
Although, to be clear, she was born in the US, to two US citizens, and never renounced her US citizenship. The dual citizenship was conferred on her at marriage - and not all countries do that.
I wonder how much time she spent in Switzerland? Couldn’t have been much more than a bunch of short visits, if that much. All those children and foster kids would have made travel prohibitively expensive. :)
Maybe she shoulda thought to do this before declaring her candidacy.
I was one of many who thought this might be a good idea, I even posted on her FB that I thought dual citizenship was a stupid idea, pick a country already.
This is a media generated LOAD OF CRAPOLA to distract from Barry0’s middle finger to the religious people of the world with his embrace of homosexual marriage.
They missed it because she’s white and they’re all a bunch of racists. /s
Dumb....backing down just makes it worse.
Agree, plus if Obama wins a second term, however he does it, Swiss citizenship might be a very useful thing to have.
This issue would have come up in the background check for her Committee assignment.
Very foolish. The day will come when she will wish she had not done it.
Of course, if her husband retains his, she can probably get it back any time in the future.
Also even IF The Swiss did so, it doesn't matter. Another country can't change your U.S. citizenship status. Bachmann didn't renounce her U.S. citizenship by marrying a foreign national.
This dual citizen stuff has beenbantored about for a long time now. The Article II, Section 1, doesn't say anything about dual citizenship.
Your Natural Born Status is determined at the moment of your birth. She didn't marry the Swiss guy until 1978.
Unless you officially renounce your U.S. citizenship, or serve in the military of a foreign nation, or make war against the U.S., you maintain your U.S. citizenship as it is.
Now, if she had married the King of Swiss or started speaking Swiss..... then maybe you might have a problem.
Reminds me of a line in “Top Secret”
Hillary Flammond: My uncle was born in America.
Nick Rivers: Oh, really?
Hillary Flammond: But he was one of the lucky ones. He managed to escape in a balloon during the Jimmy Carter presidency.
I’m a dual citizen as well, but I should save the option to leave the US for awhile, maybe till 2017 if that monster and his creepy-crawlys win this one. Why should anyone give two shits what this woman decides to renounce, just another politician who couldn’t touch the garment of the presidency; just as bad as Hillary’s attempt to be potus, but was to ignorant to realize-—I really mean stupid-—she was running against a more favorable group. So there we have it: an affirative action president, who got 99% of the black vote, the guilty white(woman and men) vote, over 75% of the Jewish vote, and more importantly, the stupid liberal youth vote. She was clearly out of her league, just as the woman here who doesn’t want to be Suisse anymore. At least Billery got chucked a bone-—mabye Suisse Miss will get some cabinet position if Romney wins. If I get banned for this statement, I know I’m on the wrong site and will have to move on to Breibart, if or until they decide what opinions are “acceptible” or not as well, youv’e done to a few of us already-—hope not.
Now read down the thread and see how many folks are calling her names...
And these people are supposedly our FRiends. Who needs Democrats when we are so willing to eat one of our own.
I don’t know the facts of this situation but that’s not the bothersome point. I find it repulsive that she felt she had to denounce her Swiss citizenship because of the political crap that it would develop. If dual citizenship whas good enough for our founding fathers it should be good enough for the present day politicians. Where are the free thinkers that endorse marriage between men separately from marriage between women. Is dual citizenship that bad a thing. I’d be proud to have it. Except with a Muslim or Communist country.
I understand why her family did what they did but am amazed that she did not see the “optics” ahead of time. While she might be a very good conservative, she is a lousy candidate. maybe that is a good thing.
Someday, Swiss citizenship could become priceless. I would have never renounced it.
She’s a moron.
IIRC, Rahm Emanuel had dual citizenship, too.
I don’t recall any outrage about it.
The United States is now the Titanic.
A second passport is your lifeboat.
I saw a few Santorum and even Romney birthers though.
The problem is the only one I have a shot for is Ireland and they are more boned than we are.
Who needs Democrats when our Republican "leaders" back down every time the libs or media say boo.
“The problem is the only one I have a shot for is Ireland and they are more boned than we are.”
You need to contact the Irish embassy in Washington DC and ask for instructions. You can also Google them about the requirements of becoming a citizen (about obtaining a second passport...your lifeboat).
I’m with you on this one too.
Thin skinnyness is not what I should think FRerpublic is all about, some of these comments do name call: So What! She puts herself out there and says something most, if not all, people don’t care about, and if anyone is out of touch it’s the one being called-out; her and her non-issue. She acts more like Obama with those weird war on this, and war on that, does she really think she is being more patriotic than other dual(ies)? Is she going to say next that: if I had a daughter like the Statue of Liberty, she would look just like me? Wouldn’t put it past most politician, and she is a full blown one. She allows herself to be nibbled on for her lack of forethought.
The lamestream media are going crazy on this one. Saying there should be an investigation of Michele and that she should have her clearances pulled. Talking about allegiances and foreign influences. I say, go ahead. Make our day. Investigate ALL dual citizens in our government.
Amen. But some people just don’t care as long as they are “conservative”.
Just the other day I simply pointed out she wasn’t too bright when she and/or her staff were too stupid to know the difference between Elivs’ birth and death (came right out of her mouth) and I was accused of being an “idiot that probably believed the SNL version of Palin” here on FR.
Even some FReepers seem to be sycophants.
Michelle’s mistake was backing down...nobody ever sticks to their guns anymore...they get a little heat and they wilt.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with her wanting Swiss citizenship.
“Michelles mistake was backing down...nobody ever sticks to their guns anymore...they get a little heat and they wilt. There was absolutely nothing wrong with her wanting Swiss citizenship.”
I agree with you.
After all, we are not utopian socialists; we do not commonly hold others to an impossible standard of perfection nor circle our wagons in defense of indefensible positions expressed by those we would otherwise consider friends. That we sometimes do so would seem to speak more loudly of our correct understanding of human nature than of our personal frailties, of which our understanding admits.
I read that paragraph three times and I’m still not sure it’s written in English.
One would think you'd want to keep at least one quick "out" available.
I appreciate those great words. To me it is a level of degree. Someone loses my support when they clearly have no real organizational skills to be the chief executive of the United States.
Even if I had no idea who the hell Elvis was I’d think my organization can “brief me” when I’m going to give a speech in Memphis. Or I’d Google it.
Is that too hard these days?
I was in a hurry, since I have a job to go to; serving people I’d rather not associate with-—someone like yourself, miniscule one. On second thought, I’d much rather drink with people I serve than, a “English” critic any day like yourself. Is that English enough for you?
[or started speaking Swiss]
maybe Austrian.....hmmm, maybe German, French or even Italian ;-)
[A second passport is your lifeboat]
Agreed, but your still tied to the US via the taxman.
“Agreed, but your still tied to the US via the taxman.”
Yes, you are correct. But that isn’t the reason one would move. It is to get out of that rotting country being run by mobsters.
I live outside the U.S. and am very happy with my calm surroundings. It is very upsetting to see how the U.S. has been destroyed. And it just gets worse and worse by the day. Folks living within that disaster don’t seem to realize how really bad things are.
Get out of that Titanic while you can.
Bachmann is outstanding.
She’ll be back.
Candidates for President all possess these skills to varying degrees and they do usually impact the direction and success of the campaigns of each. Sarah Palin for her part appears to me to have excellent people and prioritization skills, and has a greater vision than most; but she lacks substantive knowledge and communicates in a formulaic manner that does not pause to consider her audience. An important part of effective leadership is understanding what you do not yet know, but need to know, and then rapidly attaining such knowledge.
Barack Obama is an anomaly. He lacks most identifiable leadership skills except for one: a superficially appealing style of communication, in which he employs repetitive vocal cadences and musical tonality in the expression of high-sounding platitudes not recited from memory or internalized understanding, but read from a TelePrompter. Which makes him a fraud, and given his associations - a dangerous fraud.
“An” English critic. So no, it isn’t...
Wish she’d give it to me. That’s an ideal place to escape to.
