The study, from the pro-market think tank Public Notice and Race Fans 4 Freedom, finds that the economic downturn of the last several years has directly affected how NASCAR fans watch and enjoy their sport. Since 2009, race attendance per year has fallen below 4 million people, and the number has been declining severely as the unemployment rate has skyrocketed. “Interesting, but the winner of the race won’t always be the first person across the finish line.”
They may not win as many championship points however. There would be a big point bump for the last lap but if they sat in the back of the pack all night/day long playing it safe, they would take a hit in championship points.
As it is now, most, not all, races are pretty boring until the last 50 laps.
2 years ago when we went to the Bristol night race, had it not been for the incredibly loud engine noise you could have fell asleep until the end and not missed a heck of a lot.
