Mary Richardson Kennedy funeral: Divided families bid RFK Jr.’s wife fairwell
New York Daily News ^ | 5/19/12 | Henrick Karoliszyn, Joanna Molloy AND Larry Mcshane

Two divided families united in mourning Saturday for an emotional farewell to Mary Richardson Kennedy just three days after her shocking suicide.

Dozens of family members and celebrity friends — including Caroline Kennedy, John McEnroe, Edward James Olmos, Glen Close and Chevy Chase — filled St. Patrick’s Church in Mount Kisco for the funeral.

A police escort brought a gray hearse carrying her body to the house of worship, with her estranged husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and their four children trailing in a black Town Car.

Matriarch Ethel Kennedy, a veteran of such grim family gatherings, rode behind them inside a black SUV. A dozen pallbearers brought the wooden casket inside.

It was the same church where the couple’s children — Conor, Kyra, William and Aiden, ranging in age from 11 to 17 — received their First Communion.

The three oldest kids, along with one of Mary’s sisters, helped steer the casket on its final journey.

The church was absolutely still as the children accompanied their mother body inside the intimate stone church, where huge vases of white roses and delphiniums flanked the altar.

“She was an angel,” said high school friend Virginia Warner. “It was a fitting tribute.”

Comedian Larry David, scheduled to speak at the service, was too distraught to address the mourners. Daughter Kyra read a psalm in one of the funeral’s most touching moments.

At another point, many in the crowd wept when the song “Amazing Grace” reached the lines, “Through many dangers, toils and snares/We have already come.”

The mourners filled the 300 seats in the pews and spread along the side aisles and the lobby.

Kerry Kennedy, the dead woman’s sister-in-law and friend since boarding school, provided a touch of levity with tales from Mary’s political past.

In one, while working for Andy Warhol, she convinced the pop artist to donate a painting as a fund-raiser for Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

I'm not a Catholic, but we had a similar situation in my family about a year ago. The young man in question suffered a severe traumatic brain injury that almost killed him when he was 12 years old. Thereafter he bacame manic depressive and was at the high end of a manic high over Christmas 2010. He entered the depressive low in June or July of 2011 and hanged himself after buying his first house and getting a major promotion at work accompanied by a stellar performance evaluation. He wanted to be a concert pianist but was never to get the music out of himself, apparently a part of the great pain he sufered that led him to take his own life. The church detemined his death was caused by mental illness and alloed him a full Catholic wedding.

Can you think of any of those Kennedys that you'd want to have as your next door neighbor? I sure can't.

The constant traffic of newsmen and cameras would get real old fast.

The liberal “media” aka “mainstream media” crowned them during the so-called Camelot years. I’ve had to put up with that Kennedy as royalty thing since the election of 1960.

...a full Catholic wedding.

I presume you meant "funeral".

There are plenty more women where that one came from. As for the Kennedys being American Royalty that’s for the unwashed masses that need someone to worship.

I read somewhere that “Kennedy” came from some obscure Irish term meaning “deformed head.” Just saying.

Few unwashed masses if any worship Kennedy now, but they certainly celebrate themselves.

But if the Church still denied suicides a Catholic burial, perhaps there would be less suicides among Catholics. I’m at the point where I think that the constant “forgiveness” we hand out to everyone is costing more than it is curing.

Did you see that Larry David was to have done the eulogy but didn’t.

That is strange based on who the estranged husband is seeing

She’s an actress, not his real wife. His real ex-wife is shacked up with the pool boy or the ball boy in Martha’s Vineyard, I believe.

Marrying into the Kennedy clan is almost always a big mistake.

The results usually end with divorce, drunkenness, homely children, and having a cheating spouse.

I believe the sister of RFK JR who was Mary’s best friend, also whored around and left her husband, Andrew Cumo, for another man.

Not the issue. I meant that it is strange that the deceased’s close friend doing the eulogy is LD who acts with RFKjr’s girl friend. All cozy.

Why is it strange? Larry David is a big phoney lib who hangs out on Martha’s Vineyard with all the sleazy phoney lib pols. Nothing new or strange about that.

I guess when the Davids split up, Larry got custody of Bobby, Jr..

They're old ski buddies. Maybe they need to be together to plant trees as a "carbon offset."

It's only fair. Laurie David got custody of Al Gore. Boy, did she get custody (though maybe there are visitation rights).

And yes, it's hard to remember that Cheryl Hines isn't his real wife.

If what I read was wrong about Hitler’s nefews, they did elected not to have children.

By the way, their father served in the U.S. navy.
